2014/15 NBL Season + Off-season news/Boomers

Big news out of Perth with young gun Aussie signing Hugh Greenwood quitting the Perth Wildcats just one month into his 3 year contract to pursue an AFL career. He just finished his college career at the University of New Mexico and there was talk he got his nose out of joint about missing out to Cam Gliddon as Damian Martin's replacement on the Boomers team for the just completed Oceania Championship series.

Really throws the Wildcats offseason plans into disarray now and poor form from Greenwood.

Looks like we will be hearing a lot more about Hugh Greenwood in SA with him supposedly about to sign with the Crows.

Perth Wildcats managing director Nick Marvin is adamant rising star Hugh Greenwood’s shock defection to the AFL will not hurt the club’s championship hopes this season.

In fact, Marvin boldly declared the Wildcats are at their best when they are wounded.

Greenwood last night blindsided the organisation by asking for a release one month into his three-year contract in order to pursue an AFL career.

It is understood he will link up with Adelaide as a category B rookie.

Bit of a dog act it must be said.

Find that reasoning pretty hard to believe to be honest.

I think it's a combination of being the most successful, professional and richest club. They make a million dollar profit each year unlike every other club, record 6 championships and have made the playoffs for something like 29 consecutive years now.

Talk is Jawai really wants to make next year's Olympic team in Rio but knows with Baynes & possibly Simmons coming in knows he might miss out so wanted to play this season back in the NBL under the noses of the Boomers coaching staff where he will get much more opportunity to play and prove himself than he would've if he had have stayed in Europe being used as a high impact/limited minutes player.

The Perth Wildcats have completed their roster with the signing of kiwi Jarrod Kenny a 6'2" PG who plays for Hawke's Bay in the NZ league and just played for the Tall Blacks against the Boomers in the FIBA Oceania championship.

Also the NBL have released the draw for the pre-season Blitz tournament to be held in Townsville this year starting Wed 23rd September.

Not sure what to make of this news but FIBA have announced that Australia & New Zealand will have to go through the 16 team Asian region of which 7 teams would qualify for the 2019 World Cup and all future WC's starting in 2017. We won't be able to suit our NBA players for the qualification games because the games will be played 'in-season' where teams will compete in a two game series against each other and the window for these series will be in November, February, June, September, November, February. FIBA will make 10 day breaks in competition schedules in Europe to allow European based players to go back and represent their countries and the NBL too will schedule small breaks during the season.

http://www.news.com.au/sport/basketball ... 7509607402

So it seems a bit harder to qualify, more meaningful Boomers games on Australian soil 'in-season' but NBA based players won't be available.

The NBL have signed a new TV rights deal with Fox Sports to a 5 year deal to show every game of the NBL season. The contract can be reviewed at the end of this upcoming season and there is scope to show one of the Fox games a week on free-to-air TV. Doesn't sound like nbl.tv will be back next season. Great for people with Foxtel but after spending the past 5 years on Ten I would've liked to see the NBL remain on FTA TV.

Big news for the NBL but perhaps not so great news for the NZ Breakers back to back championship hopes with kiwi shooting guard Corey Webster signing with the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans. At this stage it's just a training camp invite but even if he doesn't make the team the NBL season will already be under way by then.

A big loss for the Breakers but a boon for the NBL and the other 7 teams.
