Big story out of Melbourne that Essendon Football Club are pushing for a licence to enter a team into the NBL and they want Andrew Bogut to be their franchise player!

This idea has been thrown around a few times in the last 5 or so years but has never led to anything but this time it sounds a realistic proposition

Yeah, the club has plenty of money but I’m not sure of the long term feasibility and what kind of support base we would have. The club has a heap of land and it was proposed that there would one day be a stadium built out that way for netball/basketball but not sure if that will eventuate or not

There are a few AFL clubs trying to enter teams into the NBL at the moment Collingwood & Fremantle also and aside from already having the infrastructure in place I'm trying to think of the real lure in doing so. Maybe tax purposes?

It's quite common in Europe that the big sporting clubs have teams in a number of different sports and with Collingwood having a netball team now maybe this is a bit of an arms race by AFL clubs to corner the respective markets?

For those with Foxtel the Boomers vs Philippines WC qualifying game in Melbourne tonight starts at 7pm.

Chris Goulding has pulled out with an ankle injury and has been replaced by Mitch Norton.

Two things;

Firstly - I don’t like how 36ers & Wildcats players are this chummy so close to the playoffs, regardless that they’re playing for their country

Secondly - Australia look like the Celtics from behind 8)

Maybe Sobey has got a little bit of a niggle and Joey asked Lemanis to go easy on him?

Good win :)

Some more news on AFL teams looking to get into the NBL.

A trio of AFL clubs is eyeing off Tasmania — not as a home away from home for their football clubs, but for their potential National Basketball League (NBL) basketball teams.

The ABC understands three major Australian Football League (AFL) clubs have discussed the prospect of forming a partnership with Tasmania to field a team in an expanded NBL.

Hobart Chargers president David Bartlett confirmed that three Melbourne-based clubs had approached him, but would not confirm which ones.
