It's official a new team representing South-East Melbourne will enter the NBL in the 2019/20 season.

The National Basketball League (NBL) has announced its ninth team will be based in South East Melbourne.

The announcement was made as the Victorian Government committed $82 million funding for an expansion of the State Basketball Centre if re-elected. The Knox City Council has also committed $25 million to the expansion project.

The Victorian Government also committed a further $13 million to upgrade Melbourne Arena (formerly Hisense Arena) if re-elected.

The new NBL team will be headquartered at the State Basketball Centre and play games at Melbourne Arena starting in the 2019-20 season. It will also play two regular season games at the State Basketball Centre each season once the planned expansion has been completed.

I loved going to Apollo stadium as a kid to watch the 36ers in that era.
Kenny was a great coach.

Good to hear he is back at the club but what does he bring to the table as a president?
What does a president do at that level anyway?

Is it more to have his contacts/address book of players he knows?

It sounds like it could be more honourary than functional but according to Boti Nagy he will provide some support for Joey Wright as a sounding board. I wouldn't have thought Joey would be too keen on that but it sounds like they have a pretty good relationship already and he's welcoming it.

http://www.botinagy.com/blog/presidents ... king-joey/

When he was living in the US he would still come back once or twice a year and hang around the club a bit and when Creek and Sobey would go over to the US for NBA tryouts they would do some training with Ken Cole over there too.

I don't think any other team has a formal president as such that I know of but he's in poor health and has pretty much come back to Adelaide to die and with the disastrous off-season the Sixers have had it wouldn't be too cynical to think there is a lot of PR behind the decision so it's mutually beneficial for both sides.

Cheers.
Yeah I didn’t think many if any clubs had Presidents as such.
He’s a big character with an ego to match so hopefully him and Joey don’t clash.

It’s a paid gig I’m assuming?
Although the club surely wouldn’t have much to pay him?

Any idea of $$?

I've got no idea if it's a paid position or not but I would imagine there would be a little bit of money along with free tickets to every game/unlimited access around the club. He says he won't get involved in practices and stuff he says that is Joey's domain. The owner says Ken Cole has been a mentor to him providing advice since he bought the club a couple of years back too.

Sanctioned for sending an email. I would love to know what it said, but obviously it upset the official who went running to the NBL to complain.
