Not many sports that punch on after the initial hit. No one punched Jeremy Cameron last week, or Jonas a couple of years ago, or Hall when he floored Staker. It’s just not done. That was wild and scary.

Back to the Steven Sims days.

Agree with LK, competitors punching on I have no problem with, even if some of the gang-style approach went over the top. Officials or anyone else involved though should ideally face criminal charges. All of that applies to both sides.

Boti Nagy spot on.

First, FIBA immediately should strip its 2023 World Cup from the Philippines. It is abundantly clear safety and security are woefully inadequate and it should not take an unprecedented incident such as this to prompt a “we will do better” response from the PBA.

Kickert should suffer suspension for his role in this but coming to the aid of a fallen comrade is as Australian as it gets so those sticking it to him now for his obvious over-reaction should bear two aspects in mind.

One, they weren’t in that cauldron, and two – sadly - not everyone instantly can react like Gandhi when there is a physical challenge.

Yes, he was over-the-top. But in banning him, let’s also look at who started the thing and it goes back further, with Coach Reyes and instigator Pogoy absolutely complicit in what took place.

No-one is giving Kickert a “pass” on this. But he also shouldn’t be held responsible for its aftermath.

How FIBA cites, suspends, fines or reacts to anyone and everyone else involved remains to be seen and, for once, it would be wonderful if it showed a strong pair of Molten balls.

This wasn’t basketball. This was thuggery with intent to do harm and FIBA needs to send the strongest possible message there’s more than enough of that in our world today without it now infecting our great sport.

The Philippino player who protected Goulding when he was on the ground has received a bonus payment from a sponsor of the national Phillipines team for his actions. He's going to split this bonus between a Phillipines charity and an Aussie charity.
This is getting much media attention unfortunately.

In NBL news the Illawarra Hawks have signed former Breakers & United PG Cedric Jackson as their second import. The 2013 NBL MVP, 2 time Finals MVP and 3 time NBL championship winner most recently played in US minor league the NAPB where he just won a championship with the Yakima SunKings.

Romie Chaudhari, the owner of Swansea City FC has been awarded a licence for the 9th team to enter in 2019/20. Yet to be announced where it will be based but sounds like it’s down to Melbourne2, Hobart and the Gold Coast

Anywhere but the Gold Coast.......been there tried that......

If Cairns and Townsville can support a team then surely Hobart deserves a go.

All the talk is a second Melbourne team & Tassie team coming in for 2019/20 season. Not sure if the team will be called Hobart again though as it alienated the other towns in the state like Launceston & Devonport so likely Hobart based but games spread around the state.

FIBA have now handed out the fines and suspensions from the Boomers vs Philippines brawl earlier this month and it's a pretty weak response.

The following penalties and sanctions have been applied to the respective federations, all of which are only applied to 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifier games with no penalties impacting domestic league play.

Australia:

Chris Goulding - 1 game for inciting, aiding or abetting unsportsmanlike behaviour
Thon Maker - 3 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Daniel Kickert - 5 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour

Basketball Australia to pay fine of CHF 100,000 for the unsportsmanlike behaviour of its players and for abusing and/or tampering of equipment, after having removed floor stickers from the court on the eve of the game.

Philippines:

Calvin Abueva - 6 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour and also due to prior unsportsmanlike behavior in a FIBA competition
Roger Pogoy, Carl Cruz, Jio Jalalon - 5 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Terence Romeo, Jayson Castro William, Andray Blatche and Jeth Rosario - 3 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Japeth Aguilar, Matthew Wright - 1 game for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Assistant Coach Joseph Uichico - 3 games for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Head Coach Vincent 'Chot' Reyes - 1 game and disciplinary fine of CHF 10,000 for inciting unsportsmanlike behaviour

The Philippines National federation has also been sanctioned for the unsportsmanlike behaviour of its delegation members and of its public, as well as for insufficient organisation of the game.

Philippines will play the next home game behind closed doors while a ban for two more home games has been placed under a probationary period of 3 years. SBP shall also pay a disciplinary fine of CHF 250,000.

The FIBA Secretary General has also determined that the referees of the game shall be removed with immediate effect from the FIBA Elite Program and shall not be nominated to any international competitions organised or recognised by FIBA for one year.
