ADELAIDE 36ers coach Joey Wright is no certainty to be at the club next season as he weighs up his future despite having three years still to run on his contract.

The Advertiser understands Wright still has the passion for the game but is frustrated at behind-the-scenes issues at club and league level.

The three-time NBL coach of the year, who won a championship with Brisbane in 2007 and has twice led Adelaide to the grand final, has admitted coaching was not as enjoyable this year as the 36ers missed the finals for the second time in his six years at the helm.

Adelaide 36ers coach Joey Wright leaves the stadium after his team lost to Melbourne this month. Picture: Kelly Barnes (AAP).
Wright’s teenage daughter Sydney, a talented basketballer in her own right, is also bound for college in the US later this year which may influence his decision.

He has made no secret of his desire to coach at NBA level but is not expected to rush a decision on whether he chases that pathway or stays the journey in Adelaide.

The Sixers surrendered their finals spot to Brisbane in the last round of the season on the weekend which completed a fall from grand finalist to fifth on the ladder.

Wright declined to comment on his future when contacted by The Advertiser after Friday night’s loss to Perth and spent the weekend starting season reviews and attending the NBL’s annual awards night in Melbourne.

The popular coach who has been lauded for his close relationship with his players is expected to speak at the 36ers MVP awards night on Friday.

It’s understood Wright is aggrieved at being held to an unfair standard by the league after repeatedly being fined for his comments and cast as a “villain” in a league marketing meeting last season, which was met by public silence from his club.

He was also said to be privately upset with the club’s handling of the Mitch Creek saga after the club filed a Supreme Court injunction to stop their reigning MVP from moving to the Brooklyn Nets without financial compensation.

In November Wright said he was not enjoying his coaching this season because of ongoing frustrations and inconsistencies with refereeing, and in October said his assistant Kevin Brooks would be ready to step up as a head coach within the next two years and “hopefully here”.

Earlier this month he lashed the NBL over what he said was a deliberate attempt to paint him as a bad guy after a photo from a league production meeting with the words ‘the villain’ last season was leaked on social media.

With Iran needing a win to qualify for the WC and the Boomers having already locked in top spot in our group it wasn't much of a surprise that we lost to Iran overnight in Adam Caporn's Boomers coaching debut after Andrej Lemanis returned home early to prepare the Bullets for the NBL finals.
