Big win in the context of the season. Disgraceful officiating all round.
That and the commentating are the biggest blights on the game in the NBL

Not a huge basketball fan but I must say I've enjoyed the NBL coverage on FTA TV this season, been a good little filler between footy and cricket and will be an excellent option to the BBL in the coming weeks.

Not that I'd know but it seems like the standard is pretty good, of play, anyway. All points suggest the officiating is at a real low point but again, I can't really tell.

Pretty fair the standard has probably never been better but the officiating hasn't improved with it. Refs in all sports are on a hiding to nothing anyway but NBL refs don't make it easy on themselves with their inconsistent calls and urge to over officiate.

The NBL was always known as one of the most physical leagues in the world but once Larry Kestelman took over the league he wanted the product to be similar to the NBA more geared towards the offence with a more free flowing game which has opened the game up but the refs have struggled with the shift which I think is understandable IMO.

In terms of the TV coverage I think SBS has done a great job both with the NBL & NBA this season not just on SBS Viceland but SBS on Demand too where every NBL game is shown live including the ESPN games.

And, the playing standard has improved to the point where the league has become an option for Americans out of high school to play in in order to get drafted into the NBA , instead of the American college system. Also helps that about 12 Aussies are in the NBA.

The issue I have with the refs is when the whistle blows, not one person in the stadium, players, coaches and fans included, know which way the call will be.

The game against the Phoenix was the poorest officiated game I've witnessed in my life. That younger ref had no idea whatsoever.

In an interesting decision the 36ers have named Jeff Van Groningen as the club's General Manager of Basketball. He ran the Sydney Kings the past three seasons, previously was GM at the Bullets when Joey Wright was there as coach in their 2007 championship season and also spent time overseeing the Melbourne Tigers.

Also in other NBL news the NZ Breakers have announced they've picked up the third year option on the contract of head coach Dan Shamir and extended the contract of assistant coach Mody Maor both now signed until 2022.

In international news Basketball Australia have announced that the Boomers will play a 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifier against the New Zealand Tall Blacks in Brisbane on February 20.

Yeah I guess they see it as he had a big offer from a team in China and they were unlikely to make the playoffs anyway so let him go and pocket the buyout money and they got him to sign a two-year extension to come back to the Breakers next season. This almost happened on the eve of the season starting with a team in Turkey but the Breakers refused to release him then.

Although this is a bit of a new experience in the NBL players getting bought out by other clubs overseas during the season it's very common in Europe though. Not great if you're a Breakers fan though the club essentially putting up the white flag at the halfway point of the season.

Melbourne United have announced they've signed import Stanton Kidd as an injury replacement for Casey Prather. Kidd a 6'6" forward played a few games for the Utah Jazz earlier this season and prior to that has been playing in Turkey.

Also the Perth Wildcats have signed development player and promising junior Luke Travers to a 3 year contract extension. The 6'6" 18 yo swingman has already played two games for the Wildcats this season.
