"The deal will see Irving head to Boston in exchange for Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn’s 2018 first round pick."

As someone trying to get back up to speed with the NBA - Who likely benefits most from this deal? Seems like Boston giving up a fair bit?

But there is a volatile situation in Cleveland, don't know how much longer King James is going to be there.....teammate issues and front office issues too.

Boston gave up too much for Kyrie. IT straight up would have been sufficient, but to throw in Jae, Ante AND a 1st rd pick from NETS, which will be near the no.1 pick in 2018, is way too much.

That was my thinking on it, but wondered if I'd missed something .. As a C's fan, don't like the sound of it :(

It's not all about what Boston gave up, don't forget what they now have and will have the following season.
The C's now have Irving, I predict he will go to another level now he'll be "the man". They got Tatum at pick 3 (the Cavs desperately wanted him as part of this deal) and don't forget they acquired the much sort after Gordon Hayward. Boston also has the Lakers 1st round pick still next year.
Irving is 25 & won't be an unrestricted free agent until 2019 at the earliest.
Thomas is 28 & will become one next year.

I just need to put this here again.

Good trade for both teams really, Celtics upgrade on Thomas with Irving who is hungry to show he can be the man and should get that opportunity on the Celtics and the Cavs get Thomas and some good pieces for the rebuild when LeBron leaves at the end of the season. Did the Celtics pay overs for Irving? Probably but they knew they would have to as he was getting traded somewhere anyway and the Celts seemed to be on the fence whether to commit to IT long term now with Irving they can see what happens over the next two years before deciding to lock him in long term a more likely prospect than IT.

This trade also weakens the Cavs the Celtics main threat in the eastern conference.

Right now the trade would appear an overpay by Boston but a lot will depend on where that Brooklyn pick ends up falling. The Celtics only get the Lakers pick in 2018 if it's 2-5. In the fairly unlikely event that the Lakers pick does fall between 2-5 and Brooklyn's is worse, then it will look like a much better trade.

Despite IT putting up some better stats last year, there's no doubt in my mind that Kyrie is the better player of the two. Also the hip injury IT has is a concern going forward, as well as his impending free agency.

Boston will retire Paul Pearce's no 34 after a February match up against Cleveland.
He will ceremoniously join fellow Celtics legends that adorn the rafters at Boston Garden.

I think Kyrie is the better player as Thomas is a liability on defence. To me it seems like a fairly even trade but neither team has really improved because of it. Cavs would still beat boston in a playoff series as long as Lebron is healthy and neither team is beating Golden State. Actually helps both teams long term as Boston didnt want to give Thomas Max money and Cleveland finally have a possible good draft pick after trading pretty much every pick recently to try and win now.

Decent haul for the Cavs in the situation tbh. As good as it gets really for trading a wantaway star.

If LeBron is walking end of season which everyone seams 99% sure he is, the pick for the future is great, can also flip IT towards the deadline and not have to pay him.

Keeps them up the top this year if it's LeBrons last year, if the miracle happens and they get word he is gonna re-up in Cleveland, they have that pick and some more assets to flip moving forward to keep building around him.

What is gonna be laughable is their point guard defence. Kyrie already barely put any effort in defensively. But the Cavs depth chart of IT-Rose-Calderon will be the worst defensive group in the NBA at the one. Two guys who literally refuse to play defence and an old as shit Calderon that can't even if he tried.
