Naked....ADSL

Postby The Ash Man » Tue Jul 17, 2012 10:32 am

Looking at getting broadband at home on multiple devices.

Currently have wireless broadband (usb/sim setup).

I dont have a home phone nor do I need/want one

Is naked the best/only option?

Any suggestions?

Naked does sound like the best option, I don't know much about cable so can't comment on that.

Has there been a phone line connected at your house previously?

have you had a look at the pricing difference between normal and naked is even if you got a phone line connected. I've never looked at the pricing of naked adsl but i'm pretty sure a basic telstra line is only like $15-$20 a month so if it might work out cheaper to go that way, and plus you will get better speeds through cable the wireless.

The price difference is only about $10, that is with Internode anyway. Naked still runs over the copper cable that a phone line runs on so the speeds will be pretty much the same there.

I love cable... 5x faster than the best ADSL2+!

Check if there is cable in your area.

Naked is great. I get $10 worth of calls through VOIP per month free and would make about 10 to 15 calls per month max on that line. The rest is capped, so it's never an issue for us.

The only issue could be if you wanted faster service, then you'd be better with cable as everyone has mentioned previously. For us, we don't 'game' so its not a concern.

The reliability of cable is not certain any more than ADSL so look into it.

When I was working in Melbourne my office was at one time in an area where nothing but Telstra cable was available - according to Telstra.
My landlords, a GP group, were frustrated that it kept falling over and the affordable plan limited their use of it.

I was frustrated because I could not get any service at all - Telstra said, "only one service to the premises".
I contacted the Federal Minister of the (Howard) government, and her assistant rang me back for details.
A few days later we were informed, by a third party, that one of the lines could carry ADSL effectively.
The GPs then got a deal at both surgeries with WestNet and had un-metered traffic between the two surgeries.

I got free Internet services donated by the grateful GPs...

Uhh wtf?

ADSL2+ is highly susceptible to congestion. Cable can get congested, but to a much lesser extent.

Also with Telstra 100Mbit cable, even if you are congested, or have a bad connection you could get (for example) 50Mbit which is still almost twice the speed of a perfect ADSL2+ connection.

As I said the GPs I was renting a room from (in Bayswater North in Melbourne) had their Telstra cable falling over almost daily.
That was complete failure - not just slowing.

OK it was during 2003-2005 until they got the swap over to ADSL arranged after May/June 2005 - they had no problems on their WestNet service thereafter.
Sure, that is older data, and it may have been Telstra's poor servicing of the technology, but it still warrants advice to be careful - theory and practice are not always the same..

So you are talking about a single experience over 7 years ago. So it becomes a widespread common occurrence in 2012?

No, don't be silly!
I'm just saying it can happen so don't make blind assumptions, but check it out on the other forums like Whirlpool before you jump in.
I didn't say cable was no good at all - just that it isn't always perfect either.
You just don't like being disagreed with, even by mild and indirect implication.

I'm very active on Whirlpool

Of course no technology is perfect, but the way you describe it made it looks like it was highly unreliable, when it's completely the opposite. In fact it is more reliable than ADSL2+ which is old antiquated technology.
