Its relative, my old dial up used to be about 21k as we have the oldest telephone exchange in the state here.
I couldn't believe how quick my parents dial up was compared to mine.

But I now have 1.5mb ADSL so don't have too much of a worry.

Tabs, a novelty? I don't find that at all - I'd rather tabs in one window, than many IE windows open along my task bar.

I use the tabs here at work with looking at safooty.net, opening many forums at once and just tabbing across.

Been very happy with it at $49.95 per month with 20gb download limit before it drops back to 64k.
Only thing that annoys me is the slow upload at 256k, its hell on my share ratio for bit torrent sites!

Ive had a new problem with Firefox today, all my favourites have just dropped off into oblivion.

Might be time to head back to IE for me, especially the new beta version as it too has tabbed browsing and higher security features.

Depsite the probs I'm still on Firefox, used IE for a while this morning but for some reason IE doesn't handle the cookies of this site as well as Firefox does. It was still showing as threads not viewed, etc when they were but maybe it would have just taken the cookies a couple of days to settle down as can sometimes happen.

Who are you with Wedgie? I pay around that for only 8gb with the same speeds. I'm not locked into a long term plan though which is good.

Hmm. I just read that my ISP has been sold! Might have to start looking around. Is ADSL2 the bees knees?

I can't see your plan there Wedgie , are you on some special introductory deal?http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/adsl_pricing.php?type=residential

My plan doesn't appear to be there, I actually switched from a $79.95 pm plan where I got 512k to 1.5m at $49.95 about a year ago, no setup cost too, must be high demand at the moment as the plans don't seem as good.

Dunno about ADSL2, the only thing I want at the moment is a higher upload spead as I think I have 256k upload at the moment.
I currently get about 150-160kbs download spead on most things including torrents at the moment, quite happy with that.

I can't for the life of me work out how to get torrent DL speeds like that. I've been downloading a 3GB file for a week now at 5kbps. What the hell am I doing!?? (I've played around with Port Forwarding but really I don't know what I'm doing).

Its one of the things that worries me when/if I reformat my laptop as it took quite a few steps to get it running right, I honestly don't know if I can replicate what I did before! lol

By memory different ISPs work different with torrents and http://www.whirlpool.net.au/ is the best place on where to get advice on how to set it up properly. Pretty good IT site.

Guys, the place the look for port forwarding is here: http://portforward.com/

Just click on Forwarding, choose your modem/router and then your torrent app.
Step-by-step instructions and screen shots...couldn't be much easier.

I'm using utorrent these days -resource friendly, especially good for low spec machines.

If you are still getting very slow download speeds, then it's probably only due to lack of seeds or an ISP issue.

I use Azerus and get speeds of 150-160Kbs for a normal download, pretty happy with that. (1.5mb ADSL connection)

Opera

Postby Psyber » Sat Mar 25, 2006 6:04 pm

I used Opera after abandoning the "Swiss cheeese" years ago. Then I tried Firefox until I discovered malware that could nobble it and redirect it was around - it came with Real Player and also crippled VET and ZoneAlarm. I am running Opera again these days but occasionally resort to Firefox for the odd site that won't work with Opera. Opera has tabbed browsing, and lets you export and save bookmarks, cantacts, etc.

Can never go back to IE now, just so crap. They need a major overhaul to bring it up to speed with the new breed of Browsers. eg. Security, tabs, etc
