If you have a 4 port router you can connect both via ethernet. If it is a wireless modem router then you can connect one via eithernet, one via wireless or both via wireless. You don't need one router per computer.

It should work unless there is something about the modem configuration that makes it either/or only, in which case you may be able to alter the settings or you can get a cheap but effective switch [like a TP Link] to connect between the computers and the Modem. I have 3 computers plugged into my 4 ethernet port Billion router/modem, all able to access the Internet simultaneously.

Most modems with USB and Network connection allow you to connect via one of them. It's basically a 1 to 1 setup, as the modem doesn't function as a router which you need it to, if you want two devices accessing the Internet. In a request went out to, say, access safooty.net, the response would come back but the modem wouldn't know what connection sent the request.

You need a modem/router, or a router as well.

I'll file that info - I've never dealt with those basic models, but wondered if it might be so.

In that situation, you still need to "route" information and a modem by definition doesn't do that, it just carries/changes data.

In the old days, a modem was the same - and if you wanted to share a connection you needed to use the PC that the modem was connected to, to act as a router as such.

Same today.
