E-mailing of documents

I have a slight problem wherein if try to I e-mail a largish file e.g. a couple of photos or some document (anything over say 1MB) the server only tries for 60 seconds and then asks me to try again as it has failed to respond. It then continues to fail because it will only try for 60 seconds before giving up.
Is it possible to change the settings on the computer to try for longer than this give the e-mail a chance to get through?
