Limewire

Recently I upgraded my internet plan to a 20G plan. Yesterday my usage tells me I used 9G of this when I was at work. Apparantly my wireless line is secure so my provider tells me that it is a strong possiblity it is Limewire constantly downloading? Does this sound right? If so can I just exit from Limewire if I am not using it and this wont happen?

Limewire as dodgy as it is (DONT USE IT I keep telling my Dad, use torrent sites instead as Im sick of cleaning up viruses on your PC!) would be 'uploading' stuff to other users things you've downloaded, this is what the whole file sharing system entails.

The good news is most internet service providers dont count amounts uploaded towards download limits.
The bad news is if you're with Telstra they count uploads towards download limits. (Yeah i know, sounds dodgy but that's Telstra for you and another reason why people should steer clear of them).
2 solutions.
1) Changes Internet Service Providers (recommended)
2) Turn Limewire off when not downloading stuff and go into your Limewire options and make sure it doesn't auto start when your PC boots up. You can turn it off by right clicking on the limewire icon in your toolbox in the bottom right hand side of windows and clicking on the turn off or log off option

As an aside and as briefly touched on before I highly recommend you not use Limewire. I also highly recommend you move ISPs if yours is one that counts uploads towards download limits (this is usually in extremely small print)

Wedgie hit the nail on the head, Im with Telstra (not for much longer as my contract has finished) and they count the uploads, I exit out of Limewire unless Im downloading...other than that I find Limewire fine, but havent tried anything else TBH

Thanks guys, I will do this. I am not with Telstra but Optus and yep they count upload as well as download. The wife organised our provider and we were with Telstra, she changed over to Optus, we get home phone through there also so we are not unhappy with it really. I dont really download much, i just dont have the time so its no drama there. Someone at work told me if using limewire i can slow the upload speed down and increase the download speed? Does this sound right, if you havent noticed i know bugger all about this!

I will not use any file sharing sites due to continual infections getting through the virus checker.. more trouble than they are worth imho

I found it worth paying the one off licence fee of $29.95 for MP3 Rocket as a music file sharing program. Certainly after each download session, run a virus scan, as over the 12 months or so I've had it, two viruses crept in, but both were caught by the scanner quickly. Usually plenty of songs by any artist (a surprising lack of a couple of bigger ones I would have expected heaps on, but also have to account for my taste in this!!) and fairly quick downloads.

As a reference, in over 2 years of using torrents sites I've always got the file downloaded that it says it was and I haven't had one virus or spyware.
My old man uses Limewire and I keep chastising him for it as Im the one who has to clean up his computer every month.
The only issue with torrents is the best sites are private and not accepting any invites unless you pay but there's still some good free ones around and even though you lose speed I've always found a search on mininova (the google of torrents) gets me stuff I want if its not elsewhere.
There's some great free ones out there that do aussie, english and uk stuff like diwana.org too.

so true dump Limewire.
i use Bit torrent and sometimes Shareaza ( carefully)
also for just music try Soulseek every style is here.
ive downloaded many hundreds of gigs its all about being smart.
secure the pc before you use these programs.
have one folder to download to.
virus check before opening any download.
when i say smart if you see a file and its too small for what you searched for, you can be sure its a virus or such.
torrents are the best bet.
start slowly eg mp3s then small film clips then as you get better and more experienced off you go.

all the best.

I don't have a problem with Limewire...

There is another, Bearshare which Mrs_Dog_ger will not allow me to use because of the chat line....

disclaimer - personal opinion only

Using any torrent process is just asking for trouble as you are greatly increasing the risk of compromising your PC.

If you understand the risks and proactively try to manage them then good on you, but there are many that don't know or understand the risks.

... and as has been highlighted, FFS don't use Tel$tra bigpond or any broadband service that has excess usage fees and doesn't incorporate shaping once you have hit your download limits.
