That parts probably gonna be the worst thing. Ive never done it without a HDMI cord, but i think without one, detaching it from the TVs a bit for fiddly if you wanted to use your laptop, you know...on top of your lap.

Dont hold me to that though. Could be piss easy.

Yup - would be for video - not audio

Unless it's a Display port adapter, like some IBM (and others) have.

Depends what cable you use

Fact is - you need to get video and audio out of your laptop and into the TV

Either that's video through one cable and audio through another cable, or it's video and audio through one cable - which would only be HDMI or DisplayPort. If you have neither of those, you need to get two cables.

And even then it won't look great

Go get an AppleTV for $110 and watch League Pass through that.

He can get an adapter that splits the headphone jack into analogue.

So a VGA cable, headphone jack splitter and analogue cable. Cost=bugger all.

Then you don't need to spend $110 on apple TV and sign up with iTunes. ;-)

I know he can - that doesn't change the fact he needs two cables.

VGA will severely restrict the quality of what is output to the TV.
Probably doesn't need a splitter though. Just output the audio jack to the amp or TV. That isn't hard.

And the AppleTV is pretty cool to be honest - especially when setup for Airplay.
Plus, my laptop in my lounge room is in a docking station and plugged into the amp - so moving it to another room (or outside to the 42") is a hassle - the AppleTV is great for that.

apple tv also saves you from having to keeping plugging in his laptop to the tv, he won't lose quality through the vga cable, and he will also be able to run sound through his home theatre through hdmi of optical. also doesn't need to use itunes if he is using for nba league pass. but I suppose for someone like you it would be very difficult to be able to understand how to use a apple tv.
