Naked DSL

Postby the milky bar kid » Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:31 pm

Is anyone out there familiar with what providers/plans are best?

I'm after standard in standard internet plus some movie downloads & the ability to do some online gaming.

I haven't gone for a Naked plan so far and so I can't be specific about that type of service.
However, I've been happy generally with Internode and iiNet as providers (and now they are one and the same) compared to others I have used.
Friends have been happy with Westnet.

I'd say first check with others too and establish a short list of reliable, and well-regarded by users, ISP companies.
Then go to their web sites and look up their Naked ADSL plans and work out which suits your needs and is the best deal for you.

I think the general consensus is that iinet/internode and Adam are far and away the best two, both in value for money and service. There will be cheaper ones (tpg / dodo not sure if they do naked) but they will suck.

I am with Adam and their support is great. Used to be a lot better, their call centre wait times are horrible now, but you are still talking to someone in Adelaide. I have WiMAX and had lots of issues with it initially and although it was a pain in the ass to get sorted out they did eventually and I was happy with how they handled it.

So yeah cliff notes are Adam/internode ftw

Speed will depend much much more on the quality of your copper and the distance from your exchange to your house.

In terms of data something of the order of tens of gb ie something like 10-50 depending on what plan is around there. (rather than 100 or 200) would be just fine if you don't download much. And every provider will switch you to a higher plan if you want so start small and if you run out then upgrade. They usually don't charge excess data fees, they typically slow your internet down and you can monitor how much you use.

Also with modems/routers it's probably best to stick with the one they give you or try to sell you of you aren't super tech savvy. That way they will be able to provide support for you

Had Internode since 2005; amazing service, quality speeds and great value IMHO. Would only choose between Adam and Internode whilst living in Adelaide, rest seem rubbish. We have just converted to naked and get 150gb for $59.95.

Todays stupid question:

My new house has a phone connection point but has never had a phone connected. Even if i get a naked plan, does Telstra still need to come and do a connection?

We had to have the ISGM guy come out and connect a phone line to the exchange, even though the house was built in the 30's and had modern phone cord ports on the wall.

The ISP will tell you on the phone. Usually they make you plug a phone in and see if there's a dial tone.

But in FC's case there will be no phone cable from the house to the street.....just a bit of rope in a conduit!

You will still need to call Telstra and likely hood get a technician out. Thats the $299 fee for a guy to in all likely hood connect an existing cablle to a termination in the pit or on the pole.

If its a fairly new house the cable is probably in the conduit and just left loose in to a pit or at the pole. Either way you have to contact Testra and probably pay the fee.

We're naked (nasty thought with me). When we moved in to our place just plugged the modem into the wall socket and away we went, no technician needed.

As long as a phone line has been connected at some point in time in the past you are all good.
