Anti-Virus, Spam Killer, Spyware etc

I am nearly at the point of having to upgrade the above software (& more) , what is on the market, what can be downloaded for free etc.. Any thoughts/ideas/solutions?

I am running Avast antivirus, spybot and adaware for spyware removal.
All are free with automatic upgrades and work well.

I've heard AGP is quite good as well for free anti-virus.

I use (and sell) VET religeously. Australian made etc... great as it doesn't bog down the PC with background processes.

As far as spyware - well, don't install anything "free", and be careful who uses your PC! Adaware is good, as is Spybot Search & Destroy.

Knowing your way around the registry is a good thing too.

Well now you've made it hard* for me! I've been operating a free version of McAfee- it did everthing I wanted it to, mind you I have a basic knowledege of copmputers... what do I need? Obviously Anti-vrus, Firewall, Spyware (does this cover worms & trojans?), is there anything else I need? I'm d/loading the Avast atm- what exactly is that protecting? Is it anti-virus only?

The way I see it is, all the software in the world won't stop spyware and virii getting on a PC. There is a certain level of knowhow that goes along with it, knowing what your PC is doing, what you are clicking YES to, where things are stored... what your PC is doing without you knowing ...

One of the best forms of defence is you =)

Trend PC-cillin is pretty good. Don't know what it costs as I get it free from work. Adaware is a pretty good spyware finder and it's free. I put Avast on my teenage daughter's computer so far no problems, even with all the crap teenagers download.

Trend is good for a anti virus software, as it comes with a decent firewall. But like you said adaware, is also good to have.

I am running a couple of different programs and find Spyware Doctor to be the most effective.

Can thoroughly recommend using AVG free for virus scanning. Been using it for years. Great updater, easy to use and most of all it works

I use Vet and have cranked my popup blocker up to the max. Not one trouble. Can highly recomend both. I think the popup blocker is standard with bigpond..? I can let in and out what ever I want with a click of the mouse. Spybot Search & Destroy, I have but like "Dissident" says, be careful of it. I think something happened to my media player codecs (if thats possible) the last time I ran it so I stay away from it now..? Had to re-install them, everything OK now but it does piss ya off..?

Smithy/Dissident/anyone- Looking at d/loading free products from "demoware.net". Anything I should be aware of 1st? There's 4 products there- Zip Zap, I think that's the one you're using

Something happened to my Windows Media Player in terms of the codecs resulting in not being able to use it.

That's where System Restore comes in handy.
