As far as spyware - well, don't install anything "free", and be careful who uses your PC! Adaware is good, as is Spybot Search & Destroy.
Knowing your way around the registry is a good thing too.

I've been operating a free version of McAfee- it did everthing I wanted it to, mind you I have a basic knowledege of copmputers... what do I need? Obviously Anti-vrus, Firewall, Spyware (does this cover worms & trojans?), is there anything else I need? I'm d/loading the Avast atm- what exactly is that protecting? Is it anti-virus only?

The way I see it is, all the software in the world won't stop spyware and virii getting on a PC. There is a certain level of knowhow that goes along with it, knowing what your PC is doing, what you are clicking YES to, where things are stored... what your PC is doing without you knowing ...
One of the best forms of defence is you =)
Man that sounds cliche.
