I think this is what it's called (voice over internet phone)... my dh installed this onto our computer over the weekend after doing a comparison and finding out that we can save upwards of 500 odd bucks a year using this provider over the big "T" - we no longer will be using Telstra's crappy phone lines we are going straight through the fibre optic cable for our telephone. We already have cable TV (Foxtel) and Cable Broadband so it makes sense to have the landline through the cable too. Local calls are only 10c each and with free national calls and 10 c per min cheaper landline to mobile, we thought we'd give em a go. The only inconvenience being a new home phone number beginning with 7221 xxxx. Not really a biggie considering the saving per year. The othe bonus is that the puter does not have to be on, niether does the teev/foxtel. I'd be interesting to hear others thoughts on VOIP, also if anybody uses this technology at present, what are the downfalls?
the company providing our voice over internet service is very reputable and does not have an "E" on the end.

I use Internode's "NodePhone"
18c country-wide calls - so if I call to any land line phone it's 18c, flat.

The missus' parents are in Malalla so it's saving us a lot on STD rates.

My VOIP (which is voice over internet protocol) runs through my broadband router so nothing else has to be on. Also, my phone number doesn't change as I still have the original line, and both phones ring when someone rings my number.

i think that router thing is what we've got too (they provided that for free usually 200 odd bucks) and will come in handy when I get my laptop later this year. Wont we lose our number when we fully disconnect with "T" (we're are keeping them for a month or so whilst we get used to this other... )

I won't get rid of my phone line. Apart from the fact I have ADSL (which you need a phone line for) it's always good as a backup.
Plus, VOIP providers aren't overly stable, and permanent. If yours goes down then you have no phone.

Was just about to post a topic on this and lo and behold there's already one here ... We're looking at moving our business lines over to VOIP and was wondering whether anyone here has had any experience with it on larger (than personal) scale?

Not personally, but I do know a lot of businesses use it successfully.
