Thats if you go through Melbourne. Cant fly to Hobart from Adelaide with Jetstar. You have to change airports in Melbourne too.

Its Stupid QANTAS allround no direct flights at all from Adelaide all via Melbourne/Sydney (& Brisbane/Perth/Darwin probably too )

On the plus side, it allows us QANTAS club members a chance to sink a bit more free grog

Asking, because I don't really know, would a NT team be stronge enough to compete in the SANFL? Pointless if not, no one wants to see the same team taking the wooden spoon year after year.

Does the SANFL not already draw a lot of players from the NT? If so would having a NT team in the SANFL not just dilute the players available to the current teams, weakening the league as a whole?

jtc, an NT side would definitely be strong enough to compete. They would improve rapidly and yes it may stop a few players coming down from the NT but it would also help expose many other players who otherwise might never have made the move into SANFL footy. It could be a real positive for footy in general not just the SANFL.

Maybe, but geographically you could almost walk between Thebarton and Woodville ovals .... (and then a short hike down to Richmond oval). I hope the remaining 9 SANFL clubs can sort themselves out financially to make the comp strong enough that we can find a 10th team from Adelaide rather than interstate.

I heard the interview with the CEO of AFL Tasmania on the radio and, honestly, the SANFL idea is a just that ... an idea. It's coming out of the AFL's review of 'second-tier' footy in Australia and they are naturally concerned about the (further) impact on Tassie footy if their team is dropped from the VFL. I almost got the impression he was floating the idea as a threat to the AFL as he admitted that no discussions with the SANFL have taken place.

After listening to the interview it was obvious their strong preference was a presence in Victoria and I was left with the thought of how great it would be to one day see a Tasmanian team in the AFL. It would be nice to see a traditional football state rewarded for years of pillaging by the AFL. That dream may be at least 10 years off but one day hopefully ....

I dont think an NT team would be that competitive in the SANFL, I watch a fair bit of NTFL and as one coach (Michael McLean) commented yesterday prior to a finals game, you just dont know who will turn up to play, their commitment is questionable. Some sides have really struggled to field a side week in week out, reserve grade sides have forfeited due to lack of numbers plus joining the SANFL would kill local footy.

Fair enough about the state matches but starting the season after Easter and finishing the week before the AFL GF have been too positives asked for by a few clubs I think.
Im actually with you and would prefer the 22 rounds with the 10 teams, Id rather have more footy than a more even comp.
And I also prefer our GF the week after the AFL GF too.
Perhaps we should get 12 teams in, 22 rounds, all teams play each others twice!

It was dead and buried by 2003. Was talking to John Halbert after the state game at Freo Oval and they went up there to host a cocktail party for NTFL officials and no one showed up.

The 9 SANFL clubs all own a share in Football Park and only get to play there if they make the Grand Final, the excuse being the revenue generated for the clubs by the venue. It would seem to me then that the SANFL has plenty of cash at its disposal to organise this.

The Tasmanian Government have stated several times that they will be the garantor for an AFL licence to go to Tassie, so I am sure they would back this scheme if they thought it would be in the best interests for Tassie footy.

The problem the Mariners have is that they are treated as a poor cousin VFL team, players are allocated to them that would have to be flown to Tassie for training, that does not make for a consistant team. The Mariners would probably do better in the SANFL than the VFL as a result.

What a great excuse to go to Tassie once a year!
