Big news so close to the start of the season but the Townsville Crocs today sacked both of their imports Jason Forte and Curtis Withers, can't remember that happening before.

Poor play, both were puting up very ordinary numbers during the Crocs pre-season games.

Yeah I think an unfortunate combination of that and the Crocs tightening their belts in recent times.

A bit of talk around they might be trying to lure 2011 league MVP former Hawks gun Gary Ervin who has just parted ways with his club in the Ukraine and that they might sign a local just to replace Withers.

Sounds like a throwback to the 80s.

When sight-unseen imports with impressive resumes turned out to be absolute duds.

Most famous being one import who couldn't dunk.

Then there was the "Pacific Shrink."

Imports would leave the US as giants and arrive here as (relative) midgets.

Pretty sure the record was a centre who landed half-a-foot shorter...

Yeah I clearly remember all the 'pacific shrink' stuff but with the internet can't really happen much anymore.

With this situation the most concerning part is Crocs coach Paul Woolpert has supposedly coached Forte before and he reckons back then he had decent PG skills (7 years ago) but now is supposedly too bulky to play it (he's built like a rugby player) which reeks of incompetence on his and the Crocs part.

The other import Withers was listed on various websites as between 6-6 and 6-8 which should sound alarm bells already but the Crocs wanted a back to the basket banger type and this guy turned out to be more an athletic take his man off the dribble type. Again pure incompetence on the coach and staff. Earlier in the off-season Woolpert and the Crocs were talking about recruiting a big monster import to replace Schenscher and the talk goes the guy they focused all their attention on fell through at the 11th hour so they settled for Withers who was obviously far from a big monster.

If as looks likely they're able to land a proven star import in Gary Ervin that would at least take the pressure off Woolpert and their admin and ensure they won't be terrible and might even be a playoff contender. After winning the league MVP award with Wollongong in 2011 Ervin played this past season in the Ukraine where initially he struggled and then played great over the last 2/3 of the season but then his club seemingly ran out of money and started to stop paying him so they mutually agreed to tear up the contract (that stuff is pretty common in Europe) and seems keen to come back to the NBL where he doesn't have to worry about dodgy stuff like that going on. Often the case with the NBL, teams can't afford to pay massive salaries like they can in Europe but you know clubs here won't dick you around with your money.

Jo Jo English wasn't that bad at all just as a former teammate of Jordan's at the Chicago Bulls people expected him to dominate.

Townsville have now completed their roster with the signing of second import Larry Abney.

He's previously played with the Taipans and of course the Crocs before that and has recently been playing in the NZ league.
