Power players leaving SANFL clubs to Magpies

Postby Dutchy » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:08 pm

We saw it with Salopek last year, now with Newton, link to article below -

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... 6595950375

Quite obvious Port Magpies are being used as a "One Club" Reserves team, a completely unnecessary knee jerk reaction from the team selection in the first trial game of the year FFS!

A quote from the article -

"I was asked by Daniel Healy would I guarantee Ben a game all year and I said `I don't guarantee any player a game'. And he said `well, we can'," Collins said.

then mentioned with Hinkley on 5AA tonight and he said "Westies wouldnt play him where we wanted so now he is at the Magpies and we can play him where we want"

How about letting the lad play at West and win his own way into the midfield? and if unhappy transfer him later in the year?

The whole thing stinks and is exactly why we dont want reserves teams in our comp.

A question for the Magpie fans though, how do you feel that there will be guys getting games in your league team that dont deserve their selection and/or are played out of postion that is best for their team to succeed?

Just proves that the 'One' club thing is a sham.

Why is it only Port Adelaide (AFL) players that seem to have this issue?

Crows only seem to shift theirs when the player asks them to so. Luke Jericho crossing from West to Norwood being the last that I can recall.

He has been at Westies for two years and would be lucky to have played 8 resverves games in total due to injury and the Power expected him to play all year in the league midfield, they are kidding themselves. No wonder "One Club" is considered a joke of a football club.

I thought administration was the only benefit the Magpies were meant to gain

Just doesn't seem to happen with Crows players, been at least 6 Power players in the past 2 years

Reckon Jericho swapped clubs after he was delisted from memory

The only losers out of this are Port Adelaide. Their players learn that spots are handed to them on a plate and the magpies are officially telling their fans, juniors and potential recruits that winning is their #2 priority.

It will just be all the sweeter when these duds help Port win the spoon. West and the other clubs are better off without these hacks on their list

Being forced to play reserves level players out of position is hardly a gain. The PAMs are rapidly becoming the PAPs bitches. Next year might be the opportune time to kick 'em out. Let them join the VFL if they are happy being the PAP reserves.

To answer your question, Dutchy, I'm not so sure that any player would be guaranteed a spot in any league side, nor indeed in his ( or the Powers ) preferred position.

I find this one difficult to comment on as I have a vested interest in both Newtons development for AFL duties and the desire to see the Magpies back up the ladder.

If I look at it from AFL point of view, he's our player and what we think is best for him and his development is for us to decide.

If I look at it from an SANFL point of view, does it give the Magpies an advantage in trying to play finals? Probably.

I don't know how much the Power and Magpies coaching staff have to do with each other, or indeed if one "controls" the other.I doubt control is the right word, influence? Maybe.

I can see why other clubs would be perplexed by this and somewhat concerned about the link between our AFL and SANFL sides. If this then breaks any agreements the SANFL and it's club directors signed off on then let them take care of it, if it doesn't.......

I just hope any contract doesnt have any special payment plan, third party agreement or clauses about where the player wishes to go when he leaves the club.

Fair enough Booney, but Im thinking it might actually hurt the Magpies chances of being successful and that winning is becoming less and less of a priority at Alberton.

I suspect that if the Power can find the funds the Port Magpies will be either completely gone in 2014 or playing in the AFL reserves, leaving 8 teams in the SANFL with no AFL influence, this scenario might be the best case for hardcore SANFL fans.

why can the AFL and Andy just implement the AFL reserves comp so this bullshit just stops happening.

I understand the power would want its players at the magpies but thats not how the system is set up!
