Andy Demetriou is showing the strain too. This whole thing is in danger of overshadowing the finals. The media loves it.

After going through it all a couple times the AFL imposed penalties should be the least of Essendons worries. Gloves are off however the club putting players in this situation in the first place is an out and out disgrace for any proffesional organisation.

Still think there is more to play out.
Dont forget Essendon has seen these charges since last week, they have had time to decide if they will fight or not.
The Thymosin is a big concern for me, the AFL believes we have taken it yet ASADA has found insufficient evidence of its use and all samples have come back negative.

Real shame that AFL members don't have the power to oust Andy D. Surely he has to step down after this mess is sorted out, has done nothing to improve the game, other than the financial figures which will probably take a hit this year.

Bring back Wayne Jackson!

There will be more that pans out but if you were a player that was fighting the war for the first half of the season and all of a sudden you're playing like a bottom side then there is something really wrong. Numbers never lie......

Jackson was a blundering twat. Vlad has to go too.
In regards to the saga I'd be happy if the outcome was hird gets a life ban. What an egotistical wanker. Always has been arrogant and never rated him. The club would be better without him. If they stand by him prepare to suffer the consequences. President little does them no favours either.
Memo to essendon. Do not oust someone who is trying to negotiate on your behalf for the betterment of the club. Evans was that person. Gone so now you can cop your slaying.

So please excuse my ignorance and im not being a smartass but can someone tell me how any of this mess is the AFL's fault?

To be honest the person to cop the biggest whack in all this should be Dank. He's either;

(a) just ripped them off financially by giving them vitamins and aminos but charging them for other, more expensive gear or

(b) he's actually, under instruction from the club (Hird) supplied and administered banned substances or substances that arn't ready for human consumption.
Like i said in an earlier post he should go to the big house for sure either way.

Essendon are going to say that they didnt know exactlywhat was being injected. They were led to believe that everything was above board and not breaking the rules. Its a very flimsy excuse yes but it may save a couple of them.

You're assuming this is a criminal case.

It isn't.

This is an internal issue for the AFL, a private company. They are the judge, jury and executioner.

But the AFL must comply to ASADA/WADA laws for government funding.

Dank hasn't broken any criminal laws. And he isn't currently employed by anyone affiliated with the AFL. He's untouchable.

Anyone at Essendon could also walk away from this mess if they resign.

Essendon will pursue criminal charges against Dank/company if he's ripped them off. If you inject substances that arn't clear for human use there has to be a law against that surely. Has he purchased drugs imported illegally?

From reading the charge sheet i can see lots of scope for criminal proceedings to follow.

It's not a prohibited substance, its a drug not approved to be used in competitive sport. Big difference.

Dank is covered by the waiver Essendon players signed before he began.

The AFL' soft on drugs approach encourages this sort of shit.
The AFL were instrumental in Essendon's 'self-reporting'...I'm shocked to be sitting here..no Hirdy wasn't he knew it was coming.
The first approach by the AFL under Vlad is 'let's sweep it under the carpet' unless you are an Ahmed Saad or Travis Tuck. Let Hird plead guilty so we can 'save the players' when all they really care about is 'saving the brand'.

Cripes that's just the start. Vlad has to go.

The Essendon players only signed a release for injecting 4 of the substances but there is reference later on to at least 3 players being injected with other drugs mentioned so I don't think Dank is in the clear by a long shot.

Sorry if its been discussed, but I just read the letter from the club doctor to James Hird, and cant understand why he is being charged with anything at all.

He obviously tried to shut the thing down as soon as he found out about it.

Not disagreeing with you REB. He's gotta go. But in his defence he has to protect the brand. Thats his job. Some may say he tried to give Essendon an opportunity to fess up to lessen the blow.
Hasnt someone been reported by ASADA to ACC for leaking info. Thats where i can see a problem. Andy may be the leaker but if it is someone else doesnt make for a very tight ship.
Frosty that was my understanding also. Players would have no idea what was actually going in to their bodies, unless the substance was a dramatically different appearance (colour) or application.
Last injection i had i was told what it was but i didnt get to read the bottle!

Later in the charge sheet it shows that the Doctor, after writing the letter, then become more actively involved in the program despite his misgivings expressed in the letter.

The charges say he eventually gave his informal approval for the use AOD-9604 but nothing else. The charges say Reid failed to respond properly when he became aware that drugs other than AOD-9604 were being administered.

He probably should have resigned on the spot at the time of the letter and by staying on he's got himself caught up in the mess I think.

Having read the full report, it leaves little doubt in my opinion that there were massive failings at Essendon.

They can argue and are likely to be successful in arguing that they have done nothing illegal due to the amount of “grey” information and the lack of quality information and record keeping.
Nobody can actually prove what these guys had in their system as none of them were ever tested and recorded so realistically it is all assumptions.

With that said, I now agree with the way the AFL have dug their heals in to protect the brand that belongs to 17 other clubs.

To read the full extent of this program,
• the injecting in offices and non hygienic places
• the questioning of the doctor and dietician by Hird in basically claiming to Corcoran that they are “in the way” of progress
• the exposure of these young men to possible issues for life
• the partners and wives of these men who knew nothing and some are now pregnant and fear for their children’s health and wellbeing
• the absolute lack of proper process and governance in a corporate work place
• etc, etc,etc

It is very clear that the leaders of the Essendon Football Club and in particular James Hird placed success far beyond the welfare of their most important asset..
For that, they deserve the book thrown at them well and truly.

I do not always agree with Dimwitriou and his arrogance, but releasing this report at least now gives the general public a better idea of what the AFL are fighting for…

The brand belongs to more that Essendon and someone needs to tell them that!!!!!
