Yeah, I spoke to Rosser this week and he said changes will be known after a meeting at the end of October.

I heard this story recently actually:

The Two Wells lads were invited to a barbecue at Bugs' house after the 2013 grand final to drown their sorrows.

The boys were sitting around the fire, tucking into some pork chops and a few CC cans when mighty hounds noticed Bugs' dog walk over and sit nearby, wagging its tail and staring at him.

"Hey Bugs," mighty hounds said, "How does your dog always know when we're having a barbecue?"

"Well mighty hounds..." Bugs replied, "It can see us for a start."

Well that story is bogus. I've been in America for 3 and a half weeks.

So, what do we think of the rule about clubs not playing trial matches after the season has started?

There is a huge issue with the overlapping of seasons developing lately.

With the 2014 year expected to start on April 5 and cricket (Stanley comp) to finish March 29, there really is no time for trial matches for anyone who plays summer sport, particularly cricket.

It's getting ridiculous.

I think its a fair rule. Why should some clubs benefit from having the bye first week? As for the cross-over of seasons, I think thats a broader issue. Its seems crazy though.

Question that this raises for me is - why? What problem has the rule solved? Why was the rule introduced?

I know the APFL has always been anal about clubs playing trials if they have the bye - some BS about reducing crowds at the other games ... blah blah

Its pretty clear that team who have the bye first week get an extra week to prepare for their first game. Given the short time frame between cricket and footy, an extra week during that period, when no players have other sport committments and are able to play an extra trial game for footy is clearly an advantage.

The 1St round is always the 4 finalists with the other 3 clubs having a bye.

They already get the first bye. Why should they benefit from the opportunity of playing an extra trial game just because they're rubbish. Get yourself organised and have one a week earlier, its not that hard. Better still make the finals and you won't have to worry about it ;)

Is the first bye a good thing? I've never experienced it (will this year) but wouldn't you rather be doing something round one as opposed to sitting on your hands?

Any truth to the rumour of Scott Galbraith to Virginia for $700 and him being their boom recruit?
And Ricky Thomas to Longies for $550?

Both dramatically overpaid IMHO.

Not sure on the Longies rumour but Virginia are yet to reappoint their coach from what I understand. Would be surprised if any deals have been done there yet.
