Adelaide has been chosen as one of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in 2014 by travel guide publisher Lonely Planet.

South Australia’s capital is ranked ninth on the list included in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2014 guide.

The State Government is so chuffed that it’s thrown a street party in Leigh Street today from 11am to 2pm – with free coffees from the Coffee Branch.

“Having always lived in the shadow of its gregarious eastern-seaboard cousins, the City of Churches has been quietly loosening its pious shackles and embracing its liberal foundations,” says Lonely Planet.

“The year 2014 beckons big changes for the city’s heart, with the completion of the multimillion-dollar refurbishment of the Adelaide Oval, which will link central Adelaide with the Oval and its beautiful surrounding parklands, and historic North Adelaide further on.

“Adelaide is effortlessly chic and like a perfectly cellared red, it’s ready to be uncorked and sampled.”

It didn't take long for a knocker to appear. At least show another one and pics or GTFO.

I have a 27yo work colleague from Brisbane. He and his missus LOVE Adelaide and said they'd be willing to stay here. They have no kids and no reason not to move back to the Eastern seaboard, apart from their desire to be in Adelaide.

So maybe it's just "us" who don't like Adelaide!

I think a lot of us have an inferiority complex.

We don't have the size, glitz and glamour that Melbourne, Sydney and a lot of other cities have, but it's not the be all and end all. I love Adelaide for what it is, not what it isn't.

I am particularly enjoying the recent proliferation of American style gourmet burger joints in Adelaide.

Yes, the knockers annoy me, particularly as I'd heard on a radio show from a bloody victorian who made a fairly decent living here from coaching and thinking he's funny.

Adelaide has done all right by him but he was still willing to knock Adelaide. If you don't like it, go home!

I wouldn't live anywhere else! (except maybe Tassie)

Having ventured off shore for the first time in my life in July this year, I reflected on the long bloody flight home from Dubai that we are not as bad as some people portray us.

We have a good beach only a few Malcolm Blight screweys from the CBD, a centrally located airport, a bus service that gets you to CBD, for visitors this is key a most of the they stay in a central location.

I'm the same as FC, here is first preference, Perth would be my 2nd and Hobart 3rd because its too bloody cold.

If it was overseas I would choose somewhere like Bath or Bexhill/Hastings but in summer only, those European winters can piss right off ;)

I love Adelaide and love living here.
However I don't understand the orgasmic glee that follows such an announcement.

I tend to find the people who moan the most about living here do very little in the way of getting out and looking around.

Experience Fringe shows you wouldn't normally go to see. The Fringe (and other) festivals gives us our international reputation for "arts" (Trust me, I'm not "arty" at all)

Experience a little restaurant on Rundle St, off Rundle St! Dont go to the same pub for a schnitty every meal you go out for.

Take a drive in the Barossa, the hills, the Vales.....

The list is so bloody long of things to do, IF you are prepared to get out there and do them. We might complain about how expensive things are, but book a room in central Sydney or Perth, a high end room at a quality hotel. Then do the same in Adelaide.

Catch a cab from the airport to that hotel.

Drive for an hour from the CBD and enjoy the Adelaide Hills, or drive for an hour from Sydney CBD and be on the fringe of the bloody CBD!!

Lonely Planet has 450 staff on the books, over 200 authors and has printed over 100 million books, but someone in Adelaide thinks they've got it wrong about how good this place is.

Dont let the door hit you......
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

Adelaide is a shite hole, but good to see it rates for a visit for some cheap plonk and a new stadium that no one wants. Ok for a one off visit, but terrible place to live.

Its a matter of opinion. I like living in Adelaide. If I had to pick a place in Australia to live it would be here or Darwin. I have considered moving to Darwin a few times over the last few years.

It also depends on what you want out of your holiday. Not everyone is going to like Adelaide, or agree with the list. Chicago was on that list too. What makes Chicago so good?

Lived there for long enough, so have some knowledge. Have travelled extensively around Australia, and can honestly say in my opinion Adelaide is the worst place in Oz.

Sorry to disagree with you moderator man.

Depends what sort of lifestyle you are looking for also. Work/life balance was important to me. Also being able to get outside everyday and not being stuck inside for months with the heater on. Adelaide people tend to have a chip on their shoulder, and don't like hearing the truth a lot of the time, as has been proven.

In Darwin, at least the whingers don't last long.
