You normally only deal in facts and not rumours and lies 85WAGY but what you have stated twice now is utter crap. Has the fact that your precious Bays are a financial basket case affected your memory. Brighton had an Under 16 squad of about 50 players last year but with 22 or 23 unable to play regular Saturday footy due to School footy or other winter club sport. That meant we had ample numbers to have a Saturday Under 16 team. It was ours and Morphy Parks Sunday teams that were left without a viable Sunday comp due to a drop off in numbers of some of the other clubs that often fielded Sunday Under 16 teams. So it was the SFL who decided (against the wishes of several clubs) that allowed those 2 teams into the Saturday comp but with a flexible fixture for those teams that enabled games to be played on Fridays nights, Sunday and Saturday during school holidays. That is why Brighton had 2 teams in the Saturday Under 16 comp with one taking out the flag and the other losing a Prelim to that side by a point.

And before anyone bleats about Brighton having so many junior players and those excess lads should be filtered to other clubs, check what was said above. Our excess players at Under 14 and Under 16 age groups are lads who can't play regular Saturday morning footy. This means they wouldn't be able to add numbers to another SFL club for Saturday competition.

As it was our 27 or 28 "Saturday players" was close to the best numbers we have had for a few years and that was aided by 5 or 6 new players. Clubs like Happy Valley, Flaggies and Reynella all got close to having a Sunday Under 16 team last year but fell short. Most of their players can play regular Saturday footy. Reynella were terrific in propping up the Hackham Under 16 team with their excess players but I reckon Flaggies and Happy Valley had in excess of 30 players in which to pick 22 each week. But I'm not being critical of clubs trying to retain as many players as possible particularly if those lads have been with the club since Under 8's. How do you say to a kid and parents that you are no longer required. A kid knows at that age that he is effectively being told he is no good so he will stick to his Play Station rather than go to another club.

In fact I spoke up at the SFL Delegates meeting, on it's behalf that if it wasn't voted through, all these kids would miss out on Club footy this year. i also said it was an opportunity for all U16 kids to play against each other

You still don't get it 85WAGY. What you say about Brighton initially not having a Saturday Under 16 team is the statement of yours that is completely wrong. Didn't you even read my post beyond my crack at the Bays. We always had a Saturday team Just like every other year we have been in the SFL, giving us a team in all 5 Saturday grades just like every other year. The team that you supported getting a game of footy at that delegates meeting was our other Under 16 team that was our nomination for the Sunday comp but became the team known as Brighton Black in the Saturday comp giving us 2 teams in that comp. You are making it sound like we nominated both our Under 16 teams for the Sunday comp (god knows why) and had both of them moved into the Saturday comp.

DTH is correct they were always going to have a Saturday 16s and the lack of other teams in the Sunday 16s meant their Sunday team along with MVP had to come over to the Saturday comp.

DTH where I do disagree with you is that many clubs didnt want these teams to join the Saturday 16s comp - it was more a case of these games now having to be played on a time other than Saturday mornings because your boys were playing for colleges or other sports. This obviously affected clubs with having to play at times that werent convenient for them - too bad if Happy Valley had a bucket load of kids playing basketball on a Friday night or Sunday arvo. Just as well that we did have the big numbers so we could account for player unavailabilities.

But that's water under the bridge and congratulations to the Brighton team that beat us in the GF. Clearly those kids play alot of footy together - they were well drilled and focussed

What will be interesting is what happens this year - DTH how many teams are you planning on putting in the junior grades this year?

When the fixture was changed to accommodate Brighton Black and Morphy Park, it still allowed for flexibility for when the games would actually be played. In our case we negotiated with the other clubs to find a time and day that best suited them, not what best suited Brighton (other than not being able to play on a Saturday most weeks). As it turned out, 5 Brighton Black games were still played on a Saturday at 9.35am because it was in school holdiay periods and those included the 2 times we played Happy Valley both at Happy Valley. Of the remaining 12 games, 4 were against Morphy Park so the original fixture was not affected. The other 8 games consisted of 4 Friday night games and 4 Sunday games. In one case a club was set to play us on a Sunday but several of their lads got called up for a SAFC Under 15 squad game in the week leading up to that Sunday so at very short notice we agreed to switch the game to the Friday night. The Friday night games in particular were well received by the oppostion clubs because most had a scattered day already on the Saturday due to playing a Lonsdale or a Morphy Park in their seniors.

Our club is hoping that a Sunday Under 16 comp gets up this season. Early indications are positive but still too early for many clubs to know their exact numbers. At this stage our presumed numbers for 2014 should see us nominate 1 and 1 for Under 16 and 1 and 2 for Under 14, which is the same as last year barring the move of our Sunday Under 16 team into the Saturday comp.

I really don't know what happens if once again there are insufficient numbers for a Sunday Under 16 comp. Most clubs would consider last year to be a definite one-off and that is probably fair enough so we are hoping that the Sunday comp is viable. Agree or disagree with it, but there are 3 clubs who have indicated that they won't be fielding a Saturday Under 16 team but looking to field a Sunday Under 16 team.

I was involved with Reynella's U16s last season, it was great having another Brighton side involved in the Saturday competition.
Our lads got to play them under lights at Brighton which was a great experience for all of them. The opportunity to play against quality opposition more often was really beneficial to our group and their development.
Juniors are know different to seniors in that know one benefits from one sided score lines.
Brightons lads put us out of the finals, it was a great game of footy and the better team won on the day!

Yes they got belted several times but won 3 games and had a draw in another. They also had the opportunity to play more games than they would have if the Sunday comp stayed as it was.

Having sides from both the Saturday & Sunday comp play in the Saturday comp only is not perfect but it does have a lot of up side!

As a result it looks like there may be only 9 teams in the U/16 comp this season with 6 clubs either not fielding sides or moving them to Sundays.
Would be the smallest comp for a number of years I think.

I think you'll find a majority of those teams play on Sunday not Saturday

So Reynella did the right thing by joining up with Hackham and Brighton fielded a second side (which won the flag) when other teams either couldn't field a side or had to bring up under 14's or even forfeit some games. Lets hope the sunday comp gets up and running because I wouldn't expect the same level of support for two Brighton teams in the Saturday comp this year.....

It is a fantastic endorsement of the Auskick and sub-junior programs at SFL clubs in general. Inevitably some kids fall out of footy, but if the numbers are strong ikt bodes well for a very healthy comp. Enough of this pre-season stuff, it's time for footy to get started again (except we'd all melt if it did).

Reynellas Under 16s have a lot more numbers this year including my lad so we'll be right on Sundays but I'm not sure where that will leave Hackham, it was a really good combo last year with a great contribution from both clubs.
