I don't think their is a Match Review Panel in the SANFL, as such...

As far as I'm aware, all reports and tribunal hearings are a result of referrals being put in by the umpires after the game...

The umpire in questions from this game might not have reported him at the time of the bump but has obviously noted it down and referred it post game...

I, too, was going to say this but figured some old wounds might be opened so thought better of it. ;)

Got 1 match in 2011

And also got a reprimand, from memory, for pushing the mouthy North Adelaide runner (not Francou's brother) in the finals last year...

That last one may have gone against him in regards to the offer of three matches?

The runner - Sean Watt. Former Trinity College school captain. Handy cricketer ;)

if you watch the replay, he should get off UNLESS now we are bringing the SANFL tribunal decisions into line with the AFL & if this is the case, you aren't allowed to shirt front anymore. If this IS the case, he will get 2 matches unfortunately.

I had a pretty good view and the elbow was definatly tucked in until the last millisecond where it could be described as slightly untucked.

In saying that he didnt appear to get him high 3 does seem excessive.

And not being a smart arse but once again Phillips had no idea, absolutely none the bloke was coming, he really seems to struggle for awareness.

how far from the ball was it? Isn't 5mtrs classed as "off the ball"

It's at 11:25 of the 'Recovery Session' video on the SANFL site.

Barmby could have contested the ball, Phillips was blindsided because he only had eyes for the ball, Barmby decided to go the body instead and hit Phillips with an elbow to the head. That's bad news every day of the week at the Tribunal, or should be, regardless of whether the SANFL Tribunal is now following the path of the AFL. The only real question is whether it's classed as negligent or reckless. I would be flabbergasted if Barmby plays this week. He might as well give it a go at the Tribunal, though, as he could well do better than 3.

Watched the replay last night.
It was negligent. He decided to bump Phillips, not hit him with his elbow, as described above.
Phillips was hit in the head when he realised, at very late moment, that Barmby was coming for the bump.
He tried to dart back, avoid the bump, but it was too late. However, the change of Phillips' momentum saw Barmby get him high. The elbow came up on body contact.
Probably deserves one game - you go past the ball to bump, you take the risk that you're going to get someone high and "the head is sacrosanct" (fast becoming one of the most over-used terms in the game).
It's the climate of the game.

That's the perfect summary of the incident imho.

I do find it sad though that we have gone down the path of almost eradicating the hip and shoulder.

Felt like I needed to correct the record on this - Seven's cameras caught the incident really well. Fewer players around the contest than I thought at the time.

I'd dispute that this is in itself an issue. If you have 2 players at a loose ball contest and your opponent has 1 you don't both go for the ball - one of you should keep the opposition player out of the contest (without holding) while the other gets the pill. That's what a shepherd is for too. Since this was clearly within 5m (Phillips didn't yet have the ball but was right on it) then I can't see a problem with running past the ball to assist your player to win it.

Phillips' blindsidedness is immaterial, the report is supposed to be about Barmby's intent and actions. From what I saw, Barmby did not approach squarely front on, and got Phillips by the top of the arm/shoulder. Certainly a big hit, but not illegal - not so much as a free kick paid at the time and it happened right on the ball. If Phillips hit his head on the ground and got hurt, well I'm not sure Barmby is responsible for his landing.

So I'm saying:
1. It's OK to play the man even when the ball is right there
2. As long as you act within 5m and you don't get that sacred head then you should be OK.
3. Throw out the charge. 0 games.

That's what I thought at first, too, Doddy.
But, it was Barmby who got him in the head with an flexed arm and/or elbow.

From the SANFL Twitter feed, regarding Luke Barmby's tribunal hearing...

@Ceeentrals have called Chris Cook, the officiating field umpire on the day, as a witness. There was no Match Day report laid.
