Probably just because I think continuity in rules at all levels is a good thing. Can probably find examples where having different rules is a good thing but it's weird that every level of the game seems to have different rules.

Having said that the afl tinker way too much

Surely the main consideration is that we don't have a clearly injured player being forced to stay on the field to make up 18 players.

Unless we have consistent problems with 3 or more players from one side being unable to take to the field then I say leave it as it is.

When they went to 3 and a sub in the AFL the argument was that if a team had a game ending injury early then it was still 21 v 21. But very quickly teams were saying that using a sub early is a disadvantage.

Let's face it - it doesn't matter how many interchange or subs each team has - having an injured player out for the rest of the game is a disadvanatge. Always has been, always will be.

Play on.

Hope we never go down the path of doing everything the same as the AFL, the SANFL provides people with a point of differance and for me anyway is better to watch to because of it

my response to that would be working out why the SANFL is better than the afl in some people's eyes, and trying to take the best of both sets of rule interpretations to be consistent across both.

I really don't see why the SANFL should follow the AFL merely for the sake of uniformity. The league shouldn't be a sheep. As Jim says, the SANFL has a few differences, which IMO make things more interesting and in many people's opinion make the league a better spectacle. How about let's all be individuals for a change.

Interesting that in the article it was mentioned, a couple of times, that Simon Phillips (and Kane Murphy) would not be playing this Thursday night, as per Doctor's instructions, yet Phillips is named to play on a wing?

My point is, can you think of any other sport that differs on its rules more between semi pro and pro leagues?

Basketball is one obvious one that comes to mind. NBA and NCAA have rules that are different from "international" rules.

Rules pertaining to juniors are different in most sports, but a direct comparison would be test vs shield cricket. Not too many major changes except game length. Back to footy, the NEAFL is administered directly by the afl. Does anyone know if their rules are different?

Not sure but the last thing I want is for the SANFL not to be umpired the same way as the AFL.I like that deliberate out of bounds is rarely paid and a defender can kick it 40m up the line knowing he wont be pinged, I much prefer our holding the ball rule and like the 25m penalty. Lets not change for the sake of it
