Any club arrogant enough to appoint a coach with zero coaching experience just because he knows the game plan are in for a rude shock. Norwood are starting to see this. Ben Warren may see the year out but Norwood will look back on this appointment with regret.

Another great example. Just because I support Essendon does not mean I agree with that appointment either.

Quiz question: have Norwood ever won a flag coached by a coach who was appointed to the job with any substantial prior coaching experience?

2012/13: Bassett. Basically nil.
1997: Rohde. Nil. Straight out of VFL/AFL playing career.
1982/84: Balme. Nil. Straight from VFL playing career.
1975/78: Hammond. Nil. Appointed as playing coach.
1946/48/50: Jack Oatey. Nil. Appointed, and won all flags, while still playing.
1941: Perc McCallum. Seemingly nil. Retired from playing 1940, appointed coach immediately.
1929: Walter Scott. Nil. Playing coach.
1925: Syd White. Nil. Playing coach.
1922/23: Tom Leahy. Seemingly nil. Retired from playing 1921, appointed coach immediately.

The flag that Norwood won prior to that was 1907, and the first entry in the Norwood club history of a coach being appointed is the year 1909, i.e. for all Norwood flags prior to 1922 there was no coach.

Might be just a coincidence. But equally it might mean something that Trevor Hill, when appointed, had more coaching experience and credentials than all of the above coaches put together. It might mean that if you've got the right dude, experience is vastly overrated. Whether Norwood have the right dude remains to be seen. But if Nathan Bassett was judged exclusively on his first 4 minor round games, he was one of Norwood's worst appointments of all time, and at the time some keyboard warriors no doubt had a ball delighting in all of the 'sack Bassett' threads that were going to be raining down come the end of 2010.

Norwood has 20+ players play in the AFL since 2010
Norwood for whatever reasons have been drained of players in 2014

I doubt any of the 10 current SANFL coaches could do any better than Ben Warren

From Last years GF side we had 7 playing on Friday
There was 6 or 7 from last year that played more than 5 games last year with only Mark Evans Donahue & Chippendale probably unlucky that could have made the side. so there were 8 that are new players or have been upgraded to the league side from last year.
we were competitive & leading for most of the game .
Unfortunately experience & team cohesion probably has hurt a bit because of this. But I think we are still on the right track with just some tinkering to the game plan to suit the type of players we have this year.
This year looks as though we will need to do it the hard way but I have no doubt we can be in the finals mix which will still scare some teams.

I think you're right. It took some bad errors from Norwood and some very good football from North to get North the victory. A couple missed shots at goal from North at critical times or accurate shots from Norwood could have easily changed the result of the game. I wouldn't be happy with the win-loss record if I was a Norwood supporter but I wouldn't be panicking yet. If South made the finals and had to come up against Norwood I imagine they would be very nervous.

And it wont change this year

Luke Mitchell
Does he always kick a mile and straight ?

The dwarfish Norwood defenders were exposed by the North giantish forwards in the second half

James Allan
I don't think I've been to a game where a footballer was abused as much as James today
Might just be the vicinity of where I sat
Did James cop it elsewhere ?

I call Bullshit. Surely you were sinking a few tallies at the 1950 Grannie. :)

The worst he copped in my vicinity was "that's your man, Jimmy" when some North player was out in the open and took the ball away into North's 50. Clearly a joke because Allan never has a direct opponent unless he's being tagged, manning up is for the other midfielders.

Where were you?

I heard him mentioned a few times, as for abuse, I didn't hear any aimed at Jimmy
