Potential mature age recruits from SANFL

Postby SANFLnut » Wed May 28, 2014 4:04 pm

Just wondering who the "most draftable" players on SANFL might be at the moment. I know it's not the most important aspect of our comp but thought it might be worth some sensible, non-paranoid discussion. I'd reckon 25 would be the maximum age AFL clubs would look at and obviously need a game that could hold up at AFL level.

From the state squad I would think that the following could be on the radar:

Jarrod Schiller (Central)
Luke Habel (Central)
Brett Eddy (South)
Ben Hansen (Sturt)
Zane Kirkwood (Sturt)
Daniel Webb (West)
Jonathon Beech (West)

A few others around the place that have recently dropped off AFL lists that could be on contention too.

Fire away......

Jarrod Schiller in an AFL sense

-too slow
-too small
-doesn't kick enough goals.

I'd be shocked if Von Bertouch (eagles) is on drafted. Has the height, speed, strength required to play as a key back in the AFL and also has good ball skills. Importantly, he is only about 21-22. Very rarely beaten since cementing his spot in the eagles middle of last season. He was previously a Crows rookie so I reckon they would certainly be looking closely at him.

Batley is another chance. Probably needs to put on a bit more weight but has excellent ball skills and importantly has the speed to play AFL as a half back or winger.

Big enough to ruck at AFL level? Big unit by SANFL standards but there are some monsters in AFL who are more athletic too. I think Webb has a chance more as a key forward than ruck.

Baulderstone is one centimetre taller than Lobbe, two centimetres shorter than Jacobs and three centimetres shorter than Cox, so I think that he is big enough to ruck at AFL level. I think that he is as athletic as at least the two aforementioned South Australians

AFL clubs have been interested in him for a long time. I was surprised he wasn't rookied at the last draft.

I have always liked Webb, but is he consistent enough to be an AFL regular?

Good info, thanks. Webb is not consistent enough to be an AFL regular at the moment but shows glimpses of his best. Possibly one of those late developing big men that don't really get it sorted until their mid twenties and the blossom.

Oooohhhh please, can't wait for more of our players that we've developed over the last 5-10 years on a drip fed budget to be snapped up by an AFL club for a half of f-all drip fed payment (if you're lucky) only to have them play against us in a state league comp.
Where do we sign?

That's a good point. Now I wish our players are drafted interstate to avoid that situation.

Others might suggest he lacks pace, but I firmly believe he would be an excellent Small Forward - 'Goldy' from WWT.

Von Bertouch could be anything.
Batley is an excellent athlete but his kicking and decision making is awful at times.

Max Proud could be a smokey. Is playing everywhere at the moment and handling it well and only 21

I think Nick Amato would have to be a chance.

He is considered a bit short, a bit slow and too one-sided. He is still a teenager who is certainly already an excellent SANFL player.

There are plenty of worse players than him on AFL lists.

Imho really has to work on his fitness and his defensive side of his game.

He then could play a similar role to Paul Pupolo(sp?)

Agreed on VB, with Rutten all but gone wouldn't suprise me the crows redrafting him, as he has potential to groom into an AFL defender.
