Port 2014 - Pre-Season/General Discussion

Talk on the national game

If port play off in the big dance this season, then we most definitely deserve at least 2 friday night games, and 2-3 saturday night games. If we get that, plus 3-4 sunday afternoon/twilight slots and 1-2 saturday afternoon games id be happy with that.

No doubt you'll finish top 4... So regardless if you make the GF or not you should...

Rubbish.

No it is not and you know that's the case. 1:40 Saturday clashes with so much grass roots sport it's not funny. Against the shithouse Western Bulldogs at about the worst time slot possible, 34,000 is an acceptable if not surprising crowd. I thought anything over 30,000 would be a good effort.

Jacko!

What bemuses me though Boon- is why port fans voted saturday afternoon as the most preferred timeslot?

With Brisbane, Fremantle and the Bulldogs all being in this timeslot, drawing our 3 lowest crowds this season, one has to ask the question of why power fans vote their preferred timeslot, then never show.

I ****ing hate saturday afternoons- clashes with too many things, such as grassroots, work etc. Hopefully with our increased ladder position, we can petition for friday nights and saturday nights at the portress next season.

I think our ( Port members ) preferred time slot was actually Saturday night. I'll look into it...

Just applying some basic maths, there are 6 teams involved every week on either a Friday or Saturday night. So with 18 teams any club should appear in one of these time slots every 3 weeks or 7- 8 times a season.

Correct. I would love to see port feature in a friday night blockbuster in melbourne- the AFL advised us that we needed to improve on field performances to be considered for said timeslots- if we make top 4, and indeed, a GF, im not sure what else needs to be done.

Agree, garbage timeslot against a side with about 500 supporters.
Dont know why your club wanted Saturday arvos, worst time slot of all IMO

Saturday twilight is semi-ok, but we all have to share them and grass roots footy will take priority in most states I would have thought.

The link Boon posted does say the preferred slot is saturday twilight or saturday night, so if we get 3-4 sat afternoon fixtures a season, id declare 34-38k for those games a pretty decent crowd.

Unfortunately mate, in AFL world "deserving" rarely equates to "getting". Usually always comes down to viewing audience and what works best for the biggest investors in the game.

I think 35+ on a saturday arvo for any club would be a win

Exactly right mate- but when the AFL tells you to step up the plate on field to get the prime time slots, all you can do is put your best foot forward, which so far we have done.

When you see that St Kilda got 17K to their game, a 35K is a pretty bloody good crowd.

I think the thing that is over looked quite often is the SA and WA clubs bat way above the average considering most games are only one supporter base. When two Victorian teams play they crap on about how good it is when they get 60 000 but in reality thats the equivalent of a crowd of 30 000 in SA or WA.

Not excuses, just that it's a crap time slot. The crowd against teams with no supporters like WB, NM or Bris is always going to be small

Numbers seem to be down in general at the moment. 35k to WB game probably isnt terrible but Port shouldn't be happy with that. You had 42k to the saints game amd they are travelling worse than the dogs. After last week the dogs were going alright I guess.

Saints in the twilight time slot on the Saturday, always going to get a better crowd.

Excuses Dutchy, or reasons? Again, looking for a nibble and you got it, only to reply with a smart arse response. Trolling, yes?
