Volunteers can be paid in cash, given non-cash benefits or given a combination of both cash and non-cash benefits. These payments are given various descriptions, including honorariums reimbursements (an honorarium can describe:an honorary reward for voluntary services; a fee for professional services voluntarily rendered) and allowances

Where a person’s activities are a pastime or hobby – rather than income producing – money and other benefits received from those activities are not assessable income

A payment that is not assessable to a volunteer will have many of the following characteristics.

The payment is to meet incurred or anticipated expenses.
The payment has no connection to the recipient’s income-producing activities or services.
The payment is not received as remuneration or as a consequence of employment.
The payment is not relied upon or expected by the recipient for day-to-day living.
The payment is not legally required or expected.
There is no obligation on the part of the payer to make the payment.
The payment is a token amount compared to the services provided or expenses incurred by the recipient. Whether the payment is token depends on the full facts surrounding the payment and recipient’s circumstances.

So in short - yes a volunteer can be paid and they still are classed as a volunteer.

I'll go with a dictionary definition rather than an interpretation.

Like I said, the umpires volunteer their own times to make it possible for the players to play footy. Without them there would be no games to play.

Mate you should really get off your high horse, what's the difference then when it is the time keeper yelling abuse at the umps or the blokes wearing the club guernsey trying there best or is that too close to home for you?

I know the timekeeper for the B grade game last week and I'm positive he didn't abuse the umpire!

Not Saturdays game mate but im sure B4EVA iknows what im talking about

Thank you Phantom.

If we went by Phantoms post, the highlighted part would mean we would have to pay hardly any umps we have!

Probably not as many, i'm sure you would still get some - those who want to stay involved/fit, or kids who do boundary/goals/scoreboard. The money is obviously just an added incentive to get people to put their hand up to help out.

the little buggers dont usually do it for free! they know there is money to be made or free food and drink..

if club umpires were not paid their numbers would be probably be decimated..

volunteers are the officials and committee people who set up the club on the morning of game day, work the bbq, clean the jumpers, organise club functions or work behind the bar for FREE..club umpires are paid and are NOT volunteers whilst umpiring..they can still be great club people but they get paid for their time and the others dont..its different..imo..

I umpired the remaining 3 quarters in the reserves game at mason lakes. At no time did I expect payment of any kind. If a couple of free drinks means I got paid then yes I got paid. But I did volunteer my time to start off with.
Back to the creek it is.

Just looking through the ladder & draw, the next 7 weeks are going to be monumental between the top 4 sides. Fitzroy & Lockleys seem to be in a battle for 5th spot.

Would anyone care to predict the ladder at the end of round 18?

I remember volunteering to run boundary for a C's game once. I didn't realise you got paid until after the game when the coach handed me an envelope with cash. It made me seriously question my commitment to this playing caper.

So how many people out there would umpire a game of football for nothing?? Why does the SAAFL have a prescribed fee that the clubs should pay towards their umpires??

And thats what is sad about it, people expect to be paid for doing it, whats wrong with doing it off your own back to help a club you say you support?

Like someone has mentioned, the people who are there from 8am to 6pm on triple headers, setting up the club, ground, and other things so people can play the game dont expect to be paid, so why should other club people who put their hand up to ump?

Sad state of affairs, i can think of people who do much more important volunteer work and dont expect to be paid.

I was quite impressed with Central United on Saturday. They battled hard all day and I think they will be very difficult to beat on their home turf if they continue to play like that. I expect them to beat Lockleys this week and be in the mix for 5th spot. Ultimately I think Fitzroy will get 5th easily if they can get their best team on the park each week. That could be a very big IF though.

Can we start a Mawson Lakes thread so these guys can sort internal affairs over there?

It's seriously taking away from the usual quality standard of the div 6 thread! ;)

I've hit the like button too many times... but

If you're getting paid, you're not a volunteer! It's a simple concept people.

Also, if I make a bad decision at work I get chastised for it. If I make a bad decision with the football (where I am actually a volunteer), I get chastised for it. If you're an umpire at a senior level, and getting money to do so, you should be prepared to cop a bit of friendly discourse on your bad decisions.

This holier than thou untouchable and unapproachable bullshit in regards to umpires is in my opinion making matters worse.

Dam and here I am thinkinh I was untouchable. Ha ha.

Imagine what the umpires in the SAAFL (both SAAFL supplied and club suplied) would feel if they were treated like the umpires that umpire European soccer??

None of those chastising examples compare to what happens when I make a bad decision at home and I don't get paid there either.
