On the Q.I. programme, Stephen Fry pointed out that there are so many words that contradict the " i before e " rule that the rule is virtually useless.

The correct and more reliable form of the rule is: When the sound is "ee" it is "i" before "e" except after "c".

"Forfeit" is not pronounced "forfeet" but more like "forfit". (Except maybe in the USA.)
It as a bit like like defence in English and deefence in the US.

Similarly C and G are normally, but not always, soft before Y,
So, "sycle" for cycle and "jyroscope" for gyroscope.

And while we are here, schedule is "shedule" in English and "skedule" only in American.

But there are always exceptions because English as a language is not simply Germanic or Latinate, but a complex blend of words from many sources.

Port Adelaide butchering a legendary Australian song so they can be just like Liverpool supporters.

Of course, nobody else in the world is allowed to do this....all traditions start somewhere and I for one like it, and by the looks of it about 45,000 on Saturday night liked it too.

It's a lot better than the start of "black skinhead"

Good luck to port for coming up with a great Idea (or stealing it, whatever)

I agree with Booney here

I hope Port create the tradition of scarve waving in the stands and losing matches on field

Meanwhile at Collingwood, we chant "Coooooooooooooooooooooollingwooooooooooooood".

It took several brainstorming sessions to come up with that one.

FTR, I'm not talking about the scarfe waving or even the fact that you all sing a song.

I'm just pissed that it's THAT song.

F*** Collingwood - went to a Collingwood v Freo game in Melbourne once because I happened to be there and I wanted to watch some footy. This Collingwood prick behind me dropped his tray of four beers directly on my head, then started banging on about the rain - it was raining - and how he really liked a 'good, wet rain'. Later he started barracking for Freo because he was pretty much comatose at that point, and then he DID lose consciousness and his wife and mates had to carry him out.
