Rumours floating around the Big Shrek (Lawford) is injured and in doubt for the start of the season.

I shall get confirmation on Sunday when I see him on the first tee at West Lakes ;)

Zampa too at the spinning tracks. Having Ronnie bowl would be great for the balance of the side

Yep Ronnie's fitness will be very important for the teams structure.

My first choice team would be:

Hughes
Cosgrove
Head
Ferguson
Cooper
McDonald
Botha
Ludeman
Richardson
Sayers
Putland

That would be the strongest Redbacks line up in the last 20 years.

The avoidance of calamitous collapses will also be beneficial. That was better last season

Tait is fit and firing on all cylinders at the moment. If he gets through the limited overs competition he will be available for selection in first class cricket.

With careful management and preparation he can scare the bejesus out of the top order then come back and clean up when we get sides 7 down....

Sheffield Shield Season 2014/15

Given there is probably less than 5 bowlers in world cricket that are even in the same conversation as him when talking about pace, if he is fit and interested you just have to pick him. Especially given McDonald if fit, Sayers, and Botha can bowl lots of overs, so tait could be used in very short spells. Get him through 16 overs a day in 4 spells and that would be awesome imo

So from the first exercise in this new points system we have seen SA declare early, hoping QLD will set them a target. A player pushing for Test selection has been declared on when on 100 not out - instead of having the opportunity to score a big hundred.

Previous years would have seen the team in SA's position pushing past the first innings total and probably aiming to bat through in to the first session on day 4 to give themselves 80 plus overs to bowl QLD out.

I'm sure there will be examples of where the new points system is better than the old, but it's failed on this first occasion IMO. Essentially, the game's competitive nature has stopped since SA batted in to the 101st over and beyond up to the point where QLD declare, if they give a decent total for SA to chase, which is no guarantee.

I get we need a points system, but surely we'd rather a 5 day game in the shield?

There is absolutely no chance of a team being bowled out on this pitch, so the only way for us to get a win is to chase down a total. The earlier we declare, the more chance of that happening.

The points system will lead to more attractive cricket
BUT
Will not be properly preparing middle order batters for Test cricket
Bowlers might have to be in containing mode at times , instead of trying to take wickets
