Richard Kelly was nothing more than a consistently OK player. Irvin went to Sturt I think. There was a young Fosdike last decade, but I think he chose zone over Connection to Norwood so didn't really lose him.

Also, there was the usual 6 day break between the prelim and the GF, which would have made it nearly impossible for Norwood to be competitive.

Now before everyone starts crapping on about Norwood winning from 5th in 1984, they had a 7 day break between the prelim and GF that year, which wasn't the norm at the time.

There was a 7 day break in 1981 between the preliminary and Grand Final. The 1981 preliminary was played the same day as the VFL Grand Final as JK has alluded to.

1982 was the first year of the 6 day break. It was common place other than in 1984 and 1986 when there was the 7 day break and both times the preliminary final team won. In 1990 there was an 8 day break and again the Preliminary final winner, Port, went on to win the flag.

The 7 day break became the norm when the Grand Final changed to always being on the Sunday.

Yep, Port certainly had three uses of the gale in 1989, but it wouldn't have mattered. Their defence was awesome. People probably don't remember that they did almost the same job against Norwood in the 1988 Second Semi Final when Norwood scored 2 goals 5 behinds for the match. That game the wind didn't change and Norwood's two goals came within a couple of minutes from their Centre Half Back, Rodney Maynard.

Yep, Port certainly had three uses of the gale in 1989, but it wouldn't have mattered. Their defence was awesome. People probably don't remember that they did almost the same job against Norwood in the 1988 Second Semi Final when Norwood scored 2 goals 5 behinds for the match. That game the wind didn't change and Norwood's two goals came within a couple of minutes from their Centre Half Back, Rodney Maynard.

Port had an outstanding team, whereas ours was very hot and cold and it didn't help that we lost our regular CHB in Craig Kelly via a terribly undisciplined cheap shot on Robert Handley the week before. The game was played in beautiful conditions, but that Port defence just seemed impassable in 88' and 89'. Actually thought the Bays did well in the GF to get as close as they did.

The Port Half Back line in 1988 of Abernethy, Greg Phillips and Martin Leslie is the best SANFL half back line that I have ever seen in my 50 odd years of watching the SANFL. It was impassable and at the same time attacking.
I would have loved to see the Port defence come up against the West forward line of 1983 (the best attack that I have ever seen).
Remember in 1990 Port had a number of injuries and still won the flag.

Yep Port had some sensational teams back then .. Northeast, Delaney and Fiacchi on the last line went alright too. Gotta admit, they threw a pretty decent after party too!!

Add in Delaney (pre Fitzroy), Fiacchi, Rizonico, Foster etc etc, and our backline was the cornerstone of the side. Add in Hodges, the Smiths, Tregenza, Johnston, Hynes etc, and we had more than enough to cover sides who were supposedly "better on paper".

It would have been interesting if the Crows didnt come in in 1991, as to how things would have been throughout the early to mid 90s. All hypothetical obviously and the floodgates from the SANFL to AFL clubs would have still happened, but perhaps not quite to the same extent.

Add Wanganeen, Obst, Stephen Williams, Mark Williams at different times too. There was a heap of star quality in the state back then, but a few Port players seemed to get through unobtrusively by comparison to many individuals from other clubs. Stephen Williams I thought was always a classic example, Andrew Obst the same. Both just genuine champions that didn't seem to receive the fanfare of others.

Ginever and David Brown were pretty good midfielders as well.

Northeast certainly was decent player. He must have played in 7 flags.

When you think that players of the ilk of Borlase and Tylor couldn't make those Grand Final sides it is little wonder the other good sides of the era, Glenelg, North and Norwood couldn't match it with Port.

I know that it is outside the range of this topic but another discussion point would be what happened to Port in 1991. All teams lost players to the AFL, but Port weren't decimated like Norwood or Glenelg and yet as I have mentioned before North were favourite from before a ball was bounced until the final siren on Grand Final day. Given Port's dominance of the previous three years and their 1992 dominance, Port's effort in 1991 was so out of character.
