I'd probably spend the extra for glass, asn acrylic is soft and fine scratches gradually accumulate.
On the other had tiles are much cheaper and I've done small areas of tiling myself as the labour is always the major part.

I hired a tiler for my kitchen a few years ago because there were some tricky reflex corners and he did a good job - his having a diamond saw helped.
I'll post his name if I can find it.

I agree, glass does look great but like I said, we are trying to retain some of the original 1920's bungalow character, 200 x 100 gloss white tiles laid in a subway pattern, black grout to tie in with the black bencktop and kick panels

This room was originaly the dining room, the old kitchen was a tiny galley only. Both rooms had corner chimneys (this one was RH side of 1st pic, LH of 2nd pic) The old kitchen was so small we had to keep the fridge, freezer and a pantry cupbourd in the dining room.

I'll post some finished pic's when its done, here's some pre tiling, we're also looking for a old solid rear door with a window in it to replace the disgusting one in the 3rd pic

I agree - you have to go with the style of the house.
I used tiles to be compatible with my late 1980s kitchen though using a larger tile a little less kitsch (and more subtle/modern) in appearance.

Tiles were much less expensive than glass too, and that facilitated replacing the old beige Chef cooker with a modern, stainless steel, Bosch under bench oven and 70cm glass halogen cook top, while replacing the worn out Linen look laminate bench tops with a glossy black- japan timber look. I kept the late 1980s fashionable then "Apricot" laminate cupboards, which were going to cost more than I wanted to spend to change, and worked with the existing tiled floor in a large kitchen/meals area. They look different with a new look around them.

Now, I have to decide whether to just keep the old furniture which was more compatible with the Federation style house we lived in in Melbourne, or eventually change it.

Our friends just done theirs and used acrylic, at first I thought it was glass. Acrylic is a lot more durable then glass is and a heck of a lot cheaper. After getting several quotes even if he ended up replacing the acrylic 4 times he would still be in front.

The new kitchen has:

White walls
Gloss white cupboards with white (glass front) built in oven and all appliances except cooktop are white and the dishwasher is fully integrated
Black marble pattern bench tops with black (glass hob) cooktop
Black kickers
Polished Baltic floors
All of the architraves have been stripped back to the natural timber (Red Pine)

The splash back is going to be White 200 x 100 tiles laid in the subway pattern (looks like a brick wall) with Black grout

Yeh going to a acrylic splash back would look stupid and out of place. The black grout would be a big winner. The one I hate about tiles is how the grout always looks dirty after a while and it's a pain in the butt to clean it so it looks new again.

Spot on about grout mate - avoid light colours.
I went for a dusky blue--grey tile with subtle grey marbling and a charcoal grout after I'd looked at the 25 year old formerly beige grout that had been in my kitchen.

In our bathroom we've got white grout on the walls, on the floor we went for grey, 18 years later they're both still looking pretty good.

Kitchen tiles are going to have to wait, the Wife's (family) car has just shit it's trans, rough 1st estimate $3500 give or take $500

18 months ago re-plumbed the house with provisions outside the bathroom to connect to when the bathroom was done.

Floor out, walls out, ceiling out, pipe work out, electrical out.

New underfloor plumbing to the new plumbing outside, new slab, walls, etc etc.

Shower screen went in yesterday so I haven't had a chance to take the full finished shots. Will post a couple tomorrow.

As for the grout, grout seal, tins of it at most tile/bathroom places. I plonked about 3 cans of the stuff into the floor and shower area, it seals the grout from stain/mould etc.

Remembering to seal the grout with a liquid silicon sealant, and reseal it occasionally, helps.
