Darsh Patel snapped this photograph of the black bear as it closed in on him.
The 22-year-old university student, who had been hiking with four friends in a woodland reserve in the US state of New Jersey on September 21, reportedly tried to flee but was caught by the animal and mauled to death.
Police officers found the 137kg bear standing guard over his body before shooting it dead, NJ.com reports.
They then recovered some photographs from his phone and agreed to release them today after a public records request.
Police said on the day Mr Patel died,
he and his friends had been warned about the bear by hikers heading away from it, but they decided instead to go further into the woods. They spotted the bear and when it got within 100m they decided to turn around. It kept approaching them, however, and when the bear got within 5m the group split up and fled.Mr Patel had lost one of his shoes during the hike and was short of breath when the group split up.
The friends said they last saw him climbing some rocks to get away from the bear. He reportedly shouted for them to keep running.
Mr Patel's death is the first confirmed instance of a human being killed by a bear in New Jersey.
