I wish Trav all the best, He must have leader qualities or he wouldn't of got the job.

There is Carey, and then there is Grimes and Trengove.

Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Travis Head should be focussing on turning one of these 90's into a century!

Obviously Tim Nielsen made this call, hope it is not sign of things to come if he is going to be making decisions like this!

Ferguson or Cooper aren't strikers though

Therein lies the problem for me.
The Strikers are a franchise and should be a completely differant entity to the Redbacks. They should have a differant coach/Captain etc.

Surprised the heck out of me when I heard it on Friday. Still trying to fathom it. I hope it plays out well for the young fella.

100% right. The Redbacks are the South Australian state team, the team that i've always followed be it Shield, One dayers or when they played T20. I have NO interest in this Franchise rubbish and amazes me how just about everyone refers to the Strikers as out state team. Really does baffle me that the redbacks and the Strikers have the same captain and coach.

Very surprising selection of head, given he still doesn't have a shield ton does he?
Does this mean Botha won't play the rest of the season either?

just looked on their website, still no official press release of this either. Terrible club when it comes to communication.

Botha to retire from First Class cricket at season's end is my guess. Rumblings that the board were preparing to meet after this next shield match in Perth to discuss the future of Coach & Captain.

You would think in their orginal succession plan the big C would have been handed on to Phil Hughes, just another thing this tragic accident has effected IMO.

Entirely possible. Although I have no idea if Phil had leadership aspirations or being groomed to do the job at some point.

This is just my gut feeling - he's taken leave, maybe even so he can consider his future and consider other jobs and he won't come back, by mutual agreement.

SOUTH Australian Cricket Association has today embarked on sweeping change — rubber-stamping the appointment of batsman Travis Head as captain.

Darren Berry’s future was not discussed at a meeting of the SACA board today - but The Advertiser understands he will not return as Redbacks or Adelaide Strikers coach.

A three-year union of Berry and skipper Johan Botha steering the Redbacks and Strikers is over.

Former Victorian keeper Berry is currently on leave attending to personal issues in Melbourne. Berry still has a year on his contract, extended by SACA 12 months ago, to run which would have to be settled in any parting negotiations.

Head, 21, will debut as captain having figured in 27 Sheffield Shield games since 2012. SACA board met today at Adelaide Oval to sign off on Head’s promotion.

Berry’s assistant Jeff Vaughan will coach SA in the clash against Western Australia in Perth starting Saturday.

Preferred to now Australian boss Darren Lehmann as SA coach after Mark Sorell’s exit, 45-year-old Berry guided South Australia to the 2010-11 Twenty20 title. The Strikers missed the finals for the opening three seasons of the Big Bash League before storming to the semi-finals this summer.

Appointed full-time SACA coach in 2011, Berry steered the Redbacks to the 2011-12 one-day title but the side slid to bottom over the last two seasons. The Redbacks remained bottom in the flagship Sheffield Shield competition from 2011-13 under Berry before finishing third last season and are second bottom this summer.

Head will become South African Botha’s successor for the remaining five games of the first-class season in a leadership transition flagged last year.

Left-hander Head will become the youngest SA skipper and second youngest in Shield history after Victoria’s Cameron White.
