1994 - Port v WWT & South v Sturt
1993 - Port v Sturt & South v North
1992 - North had the bye

Edit: 2004 no games on ANZAC Day, but Power v Western Bulldogs

The Anzac Day Grand Final rematch was a tradition for a long time in the twentieth century.

My records only go back to the year of my birth, 1954, but in 1954, 1956 and then every year from 1958 until 1985 inclusive the Grand Final rematch was played on Anzac Day or on April 26th if Anzac Day fell on a Sunday. Occasionally, especially if Anzac Day fell on a Saturday other games would be played as well, but the two Grand Finalists always met on that day.

After North played Glenelg in the Grand Final in 1985, the powers that be decided to program a "blockbuster" on Anzac Day rather than the two Grand Finalists, thus from 1985 until 1997 we rarely if ever got the two Grand Finalists doing battle on Anzac Day. Since then I think they have every year other than the year 2000. Even in 2004 Central and West, the two previous year's Grand Finallists played on the holiday Monday fro Anzac Day, so the tradition continued.

More years didn't have grand final replays than had them, therefore it is more of a tradition to not have the Grand Finalists play.
Simple.
I applaud the SANFL for adhering to a tradition going back to the 1800s.

Yes they are now consistently pushing regressive policies extending to match programming, and we should give them a hearty round of applause and good cheer. That's what we want, consistency.

I wonder if tomorrow night this SANFL on 7mate will out rate the AFL game (Rich vs Melb) on 7?

Probably not being a Friday night but I'm pretty sure an SANFL game did out rate an AFL game last year but that was on a Sat or Sun afternoon.

I have wondered the same thing, and given that the AFL fixture is Richmond v Melbourne I actually think it could go reasonably close.

The game you are referring to last year was the first SANFL match between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, played in Clare. This match outrated the match between Geelong and Richmond played on the same Sunday afternoon.

Why wouldn't the 50 thousand Port members be at the game?

Thanks mate. I've tried looking up Souths Membership numbers, can't seem to find them. I'll assume they have about 900 and they all go to the games each and every week.

What do you expect from a semi-amateur club from an insignificant league. But I bet they get a higher percentage of their membership attending their games than Port get attending their Reserves games. ;)

Of course they would, 100% of their members could fit in a train from Noarlunga.

At least they win something.

Norwood paying $2.30 for the win on Sportsbet. With the chance of Port holding back a player or two in case required tomorrow...that might be reasonable value..

Not off a 5 day break, hard enough playing the professionals as it is, why the hell Norwood played last Sunday with a Friday night game coming up is baffling

All the Norwood boys are either accountants or doing Law at Adelaide Uni apparently.

Neatly put, a few years to go for both Port teams until you're in South's category but at least you've started.
