It was 4000 - extra not total - and was a "guesstimate".

Good thing for those liars that they didn't have to underwrite the crowd in the end.

seems to me reading that rucci article that it was 3000 total not extra.

4,000 has been proven time and time again ad nauseaum . Chapman backpedalled at a rate of knots with his "guesstimate" quote. Pretty poor for a supposed hard headed businessman to be using "guesstimates". As for Rucci , surely you don't afford him any credibility whatsoever ?

that article still doesnt make it clear that it is 4000 extra. nothing i have seen does.

not trying to defend the figures, because even at 3000 total they are still only marginally hitting that, just that it doesnt seem to be actually mentioned anywhere.

I haven't found a single quote from anyone that says any figure tbh. only media speculation.

by any measure, its clear that there hasn't been a hug influx of new people to SANFL games. and there hasn't been a huge downturn either. If anything it seems to be a net neutral

Aggregate and average were both down last year on the average year.
That was with novelty, it'll be even worse this year.
Throw in the fact that gate takings would be significantly down, much more than crowd numbers.
One or two games completely devoid of any atmosphere too.
Memberships down, sponsorships down.
Its been nothing short of a disaster.

Average and aggregate were both down on the average of previous years. From memory only a couple of years had been worse including the year before when this was all being put together.
Things will be bleaker again this year.

I remember an article on Adelaide now, interviewing rob chapman, talking 6000. I was so p&$$&@ off at the time I rang McDermott and wildy as they were talking about it. My thoughts were if they honestly thought that would be the attendance then underwrite it. Subsequently the back-pedalling began. What was presented to the sanfl clubs (as per ruccis article) may well have been different to what was conveyed to the public.

From the SANFL's annual reports:

2014 H+A average- 2819 (for interests sake, if you remove the two SANFL "showdowns", the average would be 2752)
2013 H+A average- 2620
2012 H+A average- 2880
2011 H+A average- 3236
SAFC- 60 years...
StKFC- 58 years..

So that would suggest the trend was downward anyway with or without the reserves teams?

And that the effect is somewhere between zero and slightly positive?

Its just not those figures that count Benny.
Id suggest memberships are down and sponsorships definately down. I personally know of atleast a dozen people that have witdrawn sponsorships or downgraded their memberships. It will only get worse, the time will come when these two sides will dominate and people will stay away in droves. Only have to look at the VFL who struggle to get 1500 people each week to their games

oh yes you did....

Sort of on topic - but noticed Peel Thunder are the favourite to win the WAFL Premisership, two years into their agreement where all Freo excess players play for them. Put into context when considering that Peel were the WAFL equivalant of the SANFL Peckers of the 70's prior to this arrangement. (Sorry PhilH ;-)
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

fair point. Would be very interested to know the actual figures - although anecdotal evidence is good though it can often be misleading.

Still think the SANFL is much stronger than the VFL ever was (in the post AFL period)

As I live next to a SANFL oval (not my team I'll point out ) I'm glad 4000 extra fans dont turn up . Can you imagine the car parking hassles.
Last weeks game against West is a good example of no atmosphere there was no noise coming from city mazda . I only knew the game had ended as Westies song came on !!

There is absolutely nothing positive about the AFL teams in the SANFL
Downgrades the comp to a trial game practice exercise for the professionals and in the end will destroy the comp if it is allowed to continue

Well it is the main reason for attendance decline. Supporters are not dumb, they like REAL competitions on LEVEL playing terms

Yep, the sanfl's prestige took a huge blow accepting those two bastard children. This site is dead now, interest at games is like amateur comp or worse at times.
2013 marked the beginning of the rot. With the power openly flaunting the rules, everyone who didn't have their head up their arse knew where things were headed and interest dropped significantly. 2014 was masked by the novelty of it all, but this year will reveal the future trend.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
