You forgot that in England the fans are alot more tribal. The fans are born into a club they dont choose a club, more often than not they are either born in the town or their parents/grandparents etc have supported a club all their life. These people go for the club because they feel it represents their patch of turf.

Manchester Utd being the exception ;)

Talking about English people over there. Neutrals around the world will usually gravitate to the successful sides in any sport. There are more Chelsea fans in Australia now than there are in England :D

I think West Ham United must be an exception to that rule. Or is it just that I notice them more because it's my team?

A "great seldge"? Not even close, it's a generic sledge that only a dimwit with no creativity would use.

The only thing they have to worry about is having a shit year and heading to the relegation zone, or, like Leeds, going broke.

To be brutally honest though, we could say the same about the Crows, Richmond, Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Essendon over the past 15 years or so. None of those teams really bottom out, but could i say for certainty that the crows will challenge for a flag in the next 5 years? No.

I guess there is still that little bit of hope though, which is different to say an Everton which knows it will never ever ever win the Premiership

Without hope, there's nothing. ;)

That's precisely my point, the Evertons, Aston Villas....the best they can hope for is falling into a spot in the FA Cup final and getting to the UEFA Eurpoean League (IIRC) from there.

How you could front up year after year knowing that the ultimate is simply not within the reach of your club and never will be baffles me.

Because unlike in the AFL there is very rarely dead rubbers, in the AFL and Melbourne vs St Kilda clash in round 3 is a dead rubber, that doesn't happen in the EPL. Geez the AFL can experiment with rules mid season and trial it in a proper match (Brisbane vs gc) because there is a lack importance on the game, in fact come seasons end half the teams aren't trying to win they would prefer to lose, that just doesn't happen in the EPL

Plus having 3 potential results on each game you see a lot more upsets or shocks on any giving day, one again a huge upset like West Ham beating Arsenal is an extremely rare occurrence in the AFL!

Plus there are rivalries in soccer that the AFL just can't compete with, a Newcastle Sunderland Tyneside derby is always going to get 50k plus regardless of where they are on the ladder or what division because there is a real passionate hate for one another

Rarely dead rubbers?

Other than the top 4 and the bottom 3 the rest of them play dead rubbers for half the year!! LOL.... They aren't going Europe or going down, they're playing for the sake of playing!

Crystal Palace, Everton, Spurs, they've been playing dead rubbers non stop for 10 years!
