Renmark Hotel
6 oysters kilpatrick
Not bad, tons of bacon

Mexican spiced chicken, guacamole, salsa, sour cream and house made tortillas.

Ridiculous amount of chicken, 2 full breasts butterflied, good flavour, great salsa and tortilla. Just way too much food!
8/10

Wow.

I'll start by saying I'm not a wine drinker so the effort put into pairing wines and meals were lost on me, my fellow diners certainly enjoyed the recommendations though.

Three of us:

Started with a plate of Antipasti. ( $35 for two and $15 per person after that ) the sardine fillets marinated in chilli & olive oil on wholemeal crostini were fantastic.

3 daily specials, one of the group had the free range Adelaide Hills Hare with a tomato pasta for entree ( $32 ) and the other two of us had the Risotto with housemade pork sausage, little snake shaped grissini. ( $31.90 )

For mains one went the daily special of Tasmanian Ocean Trout and loved it, nice sized piece and looked nicely cooked ( $43 ) while the other had the Grilled fillet of Black Angus beef, baked polenta, roasted carrots, shallots, red wine jus. ($41.90 )

Me, I went the Grilled Tommy Ruff fillets, celeriac puree, mandarin, watercress, Adelaide Hills hazelnuts. ($37.90) Now, for a lad who grew up in Adelaide's west with a Dad who has always had a boat I've caught, filleted and eaten my fair share of tommies. More than my fair share and coughing up (someone else did, anyway) nearly $40 for some tommies was a bit of a punt. But my god, they were amazing!

5 good sized fish, so 10 separate fillets that were grilled to perfection. The overtly gay waiter took my review of "spectacular" the wrong way and created a slightly awkward moment when he rested his hand on my shoulder while regaling a story of a previous punter who though the tommies were "too small to keep"....

I had 4 Moo Broo Pilseners from Tassie ( $12.50 each ) and the others shared a bottled of Henschke Sav Blanc, they had a a glass of red each with their mains and we all finished with a G&T.

Total ( I think as I didn't pay ) $420.

So, if I was paying, I'd say I would have been satisfied paying that much for what I had and the service we were offered.

Rating 9.5/10 - it's not one of Adelaides top 10 restaurants on a regular basis for no reason.

take the 150m walk to the Publishes Hotel instead, a bit more upmarket than your average pub but everyone is made feel welcome, if you change your mind on the Coffee, the Publishers Ale is to die for :)

So if a Coffin Bay oyster is served in the city its ok. But in a country town its inferior?

It is lucky that a country town has a horse and cart come in every few weeks with new supplies....

Usually it is a volume issue - higher chance of them being less fresh or frozen at a place like a pub that doesn't do them as often

Nice one, will have to go there one day.

And agree with paying a lot - it is something I'll happily do if the food and service matches the price tag. Would rather go out somewhere nice than a pub 3 times as often

Any thoughts on the Blair Athol Vili's Cafe?

I hear a lot of complaints about it but I'm quite fond of the 2 kransky's, chips & gravy deal for $9.90.
