The players are mentally shot and just over it ATM.
The majority of players still love him and as bizarre as it sounds they were devestated at todays announcement even though deep down they knew it was coming. The players have told the board numerous times they wanted him to stay. The coteries pulled the trigger on Hird, he lost the support of the clubs powerbrokers and they have done what they deemed necessary

Then the players must come into question. 100+ point drubbings and they're playing for the coach? Please...

A ballot atleast twice.
Several players have invested money with him and also have business dealings with him.
Jobe even mentioned yesterday that some players are very close to him and will still catch up regularly.

Seems very Matthew Primusy.........................without that drugs, I think it was obvious that Port weren't taking drugs during the Primus regime.

For sure, but I don't think it can be overlooked the effect the WADA cloud is likely to be having on them. Really feel for the players.

Definately, I think Hird was too close at times and couldnt make the hard decisions on players. Probably went a bit soft on them at times knowing what they were going through and how it happened under his watch.
Anyway its done now, need to get on the front foot and seek a replacement. Plenty of quality ones out there, just hope we go for a untried one not some failed previous coach like a Voss, Harvey type

I think you need a hardened seasoned campaigner, someone that can install discipline into the side, an older figure who is more like a mentor opposed to a mate.

Yeah, but there is isn't too many of them floating about, although he's a bit younger than who I'd believe would fit the bill, Guy McKenna would no doubt have some unfinished business, at least he's a blue collared, hard nosed person with a professional attitude.

That's one way to turn the 112 point drubbings around.............................to 212's.

If he didn't go and kill all hopes and faith in his coaching abilities, he probably would've been a decent fit.

Interesting to see people saying he wasn't a great coach. Too close to the players, not making the hard calls etc.

I disagree. Without the drugs saga hanging over their heads this team would have been fighting for top 4 the last 2/3 years with the list they have.

As much as he bought this on himself its pretty hard seeing a champion go out this way.

Seems like the model of getting a recently retired favourite son to coach is officially dead now. (Ratten, Voss, Primus, Hird)

Roos and worsfold come to mind as recent exceptions to that though.

Seems to me like the players who are really serious about a coaching career move away as soon as they can, lest they be forever tied to that club

Yep, not many do it. Even the great Matthews never went back to Hawthorn despite being asked to numerous times

Goodwin probably a good example - would have the crows job if he wanted it but clearly wanted to forge his career away from the crows.
