Just a pity the SANFL is stuck with the "sloppy seconds" :D

People (blokes) watched Puberty Blues?

A feast of Aussie culture, shown at 12:00 in the morning or some such hour one month after I returned from 13 years in Japan. It was after watching this movie I stopped bowing to people, and began using words such as "mate" again.
Highly instructional. ;)

Suggest you also watch "The FJ Holden" as soon as is practical. ;)

This is interesting, the AFL now recognising their weakness with respect to clubs representing their communities:

Gillon McLachlan quote from the Guardian wrote: the AFL has also received support from our club CEOs to examine a new zoning system where a region is assigned to each club and the clubs are empowered and funded to develop talent and recruit in indigenous or multicultural communities.

“It would mean carving up areas in our suburbs, inner and outer, [and] regional communities, for clubs to grow their talent base and ultimately their support base. The talent developed in those zones will be available to clubs through a priority draft bidding system.”

Not great news for the SANFL clubs, about the only advantage SANFL clubs have against AFL clubs is they can be identified by the suburbs they represent Elizabeth=Centrals, Glenelg=Glenelg, Sturt=Unley etc.

Excuse my ignorance, but do Adelaide United & the redbacks have reserves teams that follow the main teams around Australia?

Yes exactly, it has been the weakness of the AFL model and contributes to it being called an artificial franchise competition. All the money they earn is distributed to the elite with very little trickle down to the region they are supposed to represent. I would think the first step is AFL club academies.

As for the SANFL clubs, my guess is if the SANFL continue the close association with the AFL like we are now, the long term aim would be for the clubs and respective zones to be split amongst the 2 AFL teams.

Yep because that was pre AFL.

It is long overdue that someone stood up and said stop. The AFL will do long term damage as it continues to weaken the lower levels.

Yep, this new approach is a massive threat to those of us who want a stand alone, semi professional community based alternative. You could mount a case that its more urgent that the SANFL does something about the AFL reserves prior to the AFL adopting this model. Give us a couple of seasons prior to its implementation.

IMO, unfortunately with the latest massive broadcasting deal and this new model, the game has changed again. The SANFL will be totally engulfed, unless we have some stalwarts from 3 of the 6 clubs who will stand up, change their boards and join Centrals and South to kick the reserves out.

Although they play at different times to the Redbacks, yes, there is a 'reserve team' that plays matches around Australia.

sorry, but the above coming from one of the posters that thought the reserves sides in the sanfl was a good idea and would raise interest in the sanfl tells me that it is doomed to fail

I agree. I don`t understand people saying the damage is already done. If they were chucked out I am pretty sure the crowds would pick up again, but the SANFL would have to work pretty hard after that season as it would wear of pretty quick and we would be back to where we were before the two cancers arrived.
