Before I was a fat and lazy forward, I spent a bit of time as a running defender. If I recall, Darren Ellis actually played on him that day and I was supposed to provide the chop/defensive spoil. He beat us both hands down. Way too good.

Feeling old - three of the lads drafted yesterday, I played with/against their fathers.

Essendon have used their last rookie pick (54) to take Tom Wallis as F/S. Will have 3 live picks today

Rookie draft, what a joke. Just increase the playing the list. Players re-drafted onto a rookie list is bullshit. Understand some players take longer to develop but if teams had bigger squads they could take some chances on kids and not cut them after 2 years if they havent made it yet. Essendon going to put Fletcher on the rookie list??

Rookie list has been code for overworked and underpaid professional footballer in the past. I believe they are paid a bit better these days but still the term 'rookie' has lost its relevance when you have guys that have AFL games played at other clubs placed on the list.

It's just a back up for injured players. 99% of rookie listed players would take the financial "hit" to do it. I'm not sure what they are paid...$70k? That's not bad to train with an AFL club full time even...

Rookie draft is a false name.
It's not for rookies, it's for guys who want to get on a list or stay on the list for rookie pay. If someone like a Kane Mitchell wants to stay on a AFL list for $70k a year then good luck to him. They have the chance to be upgraded during the year. I'd imagine a few mature SANFL/VFL players get picked up plus a few re-rookied

Being a teacher he would be taking a financial hit IMO but throughly deserves his spot on an AFL list.

Correct, there was only two or three clubs with preseason picks available and they have filled them in the draft and/or rookie draft.
