Stephen Fry.

Saw him last night in the flesh at the Festival Theatre. He spoke honestly and passionately about the long struggle for legalising homosexuality, going back to the trials of Oscar Wilde and the effect that that had on him as a young boy (as well as Wilde's talent for writing), and the efforts of Don Dunstan to be the first state to make such a radical social change. He also spoke about his issues with bipolar disorder in a one-on-one interview with Annabel Crabb. At one point he made a joke about Victorian policemen, saying how the term 'Victorian' reminded him of 19th century England and images of policemen in tall hats and large waxed mustaches stiffly running around with truncheons. As he ran across the stage to demonstrate this, he pulled a face that looked exactly like the face he pulled when he played Lord Melchett in Blackadder. Great to see.

When I hear people like him speak on social issues, with such an enormous intellect, wonderful command of the language and persuasive, commonsense and respectful arguments, it makes me wonder whether they should be involved in politics, as a means of adding sense and intelligence to the overall public conversation - a bit like Malcolm Turnbull has in Australian domestic politics (I emphasise the 'bit'). I think the answer is 'no' - genuine 'celebrities' like Stephen Fry can do more good and influence more people and attitudes from outside of the political machine than from within.

Anyway, great to see such a giant from about 5 rows in.

Claridge Holden

The missus car which is only reasonably new has an issue (under warranty ), she takes it in and they give her a brand new car as a loan car. Nice, was expecting some fist thumping on the desk.

Cracking mornings like this one, getting up early and going for a walk, getting the old Falcon out the shed and meandering my way into the office along the beach front with the crisp morning air coming in......and knowing I'll hit the pub for a schnitty and some frothies tonight.

Serenity now. Now shit shall drag me down this day.

I'll do my next batch in the week before Xmas Day. I think I'll go either a Boags style lager or a Little Creatures style Golden Ale. I've got an ale now, so perhaps a lager for the hotter days coming up.
