Good get for the Double Blues...

Lewis Johnston 'getting close' to signing with the Redlegs...

http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl ... bc70427a18

SANFL powerhouse Norwood is on the verge of signing star key forward Lewis Johnston from North Adelaide.

In a deal which would make the Redlegs — winner of three consecutive premierships from 2012-14 — flag favourites next season, the club hopes to wrap up a deal for the former Crows and Swans AFL player by Christmas.

Johnston, 24, walked out on North last month after a disagreement with new coach, 2004 Power premiership player Josh Carr.

Six SANFL clubs battled for his services but he chose Norwood, which is close to his workplace.

The Redlegs are now waiting for the Roosters to name their transfer fee asking price for Johnston, who had two years left on his contract.

This looms as being hefty and in the region of $50,000 because of Johnston’s playing record, age and game-changing ability.

A strong mark, he is regarded as the best kick in the SANFL.

But he is injury prone and missed most of last season with a broken ankle.

“We’re really pleased that Lewis has chosen Norwood as the club he wants to play for next year,’’ Redlegs football manager Mark Ross said.

“He’s clearly a high-quality key forward and he would be a good fit for us given we’ve just lost (key forwards) Michael Newton and Liam Davis.

“There’s some negotiating to do between the two clubs but we’re hopeful we can get something done before Christmas.’’

The news that Johnston, 192cm, appears to be heading to Norwood has angered rival clubs, given the Legs’ off-season recruiting splurge.

They already have secured a host of quality players, including Norwood premiership men Jaryd Cachia (Richmond VFL), Andrew Kirwan (returned), Matt Fuller (Western Bulldogs) and Anthony Wilson (Adelaide), who have returned to the club, Josh Miller (Glenelg), Luke Mitchell (North Adelaide), Jake Sutcliffe (Adelaide SANFL) and Lyndon Hupfeld (GWS Academy).

But Ross argues that the Redlegs will be able to fit Johnston under the $400,000 salary cap because of the departures of regulars Newton, Davis, Andrew McInnes, James Allan, Mitch Wilkins, Kane Murphy and Luke Partington.

North cut ties with Johnston, who was drafted at pick 12 by Sydney at the 2008 national draft and played 10 AFL games with the Crows (eight) and Swans (two) from 2009-14, after a discussion with Carr soon after he broke his big toe playing social basketball.

In a statement on their club website the Roosters said: “After several meetings with the coach and management Lewis has advised that he no longer wants to be part of the team at North Adelaide.

“As our supporters have rightfully demanded there has been new standards and expectations set at the club after a horrible season on field and all players are required to commit fully to the program under Josh Carr. Lewis doesn’t wish to commit to this and has indicated he prefers not to play.

Kidding aren't ya's (and nice sensationalism from Capel, trying to prove he's still out there I guess)

We're bringing in mostly returned players that whilst not min wage players, would play for less than if they went to other clubs via the open market. We've also lost 2/5 and 3/8 of our highest paid players. Nice beat up.

Does Norwood have an agreement with the SANFL whereby it can claim a North player for its squad? Kind of like a marquee player arrangement?

Your mob haven't missed a chance for an upgrade player yet! How can that be with a salary cap in play?
The best example now is McMahon goes to Sturt..... after the Eagles were in play all the way but have to decide on O'Brien at 22 yrs
or McMahon at the back end of a fine career being 29 yrs.
Both would have been ideal and the Norwood way, but we ain't dealing from the bottom of the deck!
The League shouldn't allow Golden Balls to play for a low $ contract when everyone knows it's BS ....

What you fail to realise is that Newton was in the top 10% of salaries in the comp. Jimmy was also well paid. LJ, Cachia and probably Fuller combined wouldn't equal Newtons wage.
Eagles supporters should be the last to throw stones, I know exactly what O'Brien is on and he would now be close to the highest paid player in the comp.
There is also no law about top ups from employers as every club does it and rightly so

LMAO, yep you'd be the one to talk about someone else embarrassing themself.

You do realise we were in for O'Brien aswell, but your mobs offer blew everyone else out of the water .. If this Norwood way exists why didn't we take him too?

Pretty easy to throw darts at us when you're the darlings of the SANFL - Im sure if things get too hard again they'll find a way to help you out again.

When he first signed at Norwood maybe. My information from someone associated with NFC is that he took a massive pay cut for his next contract given he didn't live up to expectations because of injury and form.

O'Brien came to Norwood first. He got on well with Bassett at Essendon and when he was cut from the club he phoned Bass for advice and was told to come to the SANFL and Norwood would be a good fit. O'Briens pay demands were far too much for Essendon's VFL side and Norwood, his asking price would make him the highest paid in the SANFL easily.

Lets face it, Norwood don't really worry about a salary cap, looking at your ins and outs the quality in the players coming in compared to the ones that have left to me says you are already close to over but like i said Norwood don't worry about that anyway. Newton in the top 10% of salaries in the comp, geez i would've hated paying all that money when he was sitting in the reserves a few years back.

Why don't you go through the ins and outs and list what you think they are worth?
Cachia is probably the only one who I'm not sure on and reckon he would be on a bit but Fuller was offered good money by 2 VFL sides but chose to come home, Kirwan and Wilson also returning for a fraction they could get elsewhere and in Wilson and Fullers case they would be aiming to get back on a AFL list and believe they can play their best footy back home. Lost a fair bit of quality in the offseason and for some of the players coming in money isn't the only factor. LJ is one who could earn a fair bit more elsewhere but due to several other factors have decided he wants to play at Norwood. Obviously this all depends on an agreement being reached over the transfer
