making light of the situation and condoning his behaviour is different to being apathetic.

but cheers for reminding me why people stop posting here

If you're making light of the situation then you'd be doing the opposite to condoning the situation if anything! Derr!

Another one for this topic, people who try to be high and mighty but actually do the opposite and promote their own stupidity.

What is sad is the fact that this story has dominated various forms of media, less than a day after a bloke drove he and his 2 kids off a cliff, and another had his life support turned off as a result of a cowardly punch.

Not to say that what Gayle did was appropriate (not sexist though), but surely this is prime time to again highlight our nations issues surrounding alcohol fuelled violence and depression..

Had this very discussion last night when the "news" ran Gayle, Gayle, Gayle headlines. It's the modern world, "Wait a minute, I haven't said my piece so the issue can't rest yet!"

Obvious mental illness.

Not condoning what he did, but having a father who suffered from and battled schizophrenia for 10 years (2 suicide attempts, 1 successful), I have seen first hand how mental illness f**ks people up, and makes them do things they know are wrong, but still can't stop themselves.

With good reason. Someone making those decisions is unwell, they are not in control and you can have nothing but sympathy, empathy for him and his family.

Very,very sad.

Sorry to hear, HH3. As a 20+ year sufferer of mental illness, I know it's just as hard for the people around us to handle.

I'd liken it (in my case, anyway) to Dexter's 'Dark Passenger'.

It's a big part of me, and while it doesn't fully consume me at all times, I am prone to days/weeks/months of complete darkness. It's during these times where I'm really not myself, and am just functioning on auto-pilot.

For the family who recognised his illness, yes. For the innocent victims dragged into this mess absolutely. Those closest to him will look back and think what more could have been done to help him.

I saw that really nice photo of him with his wife & sons sitting on the sand - it could've been any one of us without knowing what was going on inside.

Having family members and a girlfriend with depression I understand the issues as much as anyone, and Id have a lot of sympathy for this guy if it was just himself that he drove into the water. Loses that sympathy with me when he took out innocent children too. Really feel for the mother who now will be dealing with this every day for the rest of her life

That's fair enough, but I still have sympathy for him.

In his head he knew he was gonna take his kids lives, and I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine that would've been killing him inside.

People that are that far gone have no control. The guy from Stepney that just got sentenced for killing his son is in the same boat. Even his ex-wife knows that he would never have done it if he didn't have mental illness issues.

The blokes a murderer. Do not feel sorry for him one bit..

I didn't write what is below.

The difference between a man who suicides and a man who commits murder-suicide is not how mentally ill he is. It's how narcissitic he is, and how proprietary he is in his attitude towards women and children.

Damien Little, who murdered his two sons in Port Lincoln, has been described in some papers today as a "victim". Some papers have even urged us not to engage in "victim blaming" him.

Heaven forbid we call out the actions of a man who murdered his children! Heaven forbid we be critical of his choices.

If this man murdered 2 children that were not his own NO- ONE would be urging us to withhold judgement and tip toe around it. But because we live in a society where women and children are still seen as an extension of the men they are related to, and because we live in a society where women and children are expected to absorb the violent outbursts of the men they ''belong'' to, we're being told not to say anything nasty about this man. It's absolutely outrageous.

That just sounds like the same bullshit we've been bombarded with for the last year about how shit men are. A woman at work said its only men that kill their kids. I looked up the official stats of Filicide with a very even split. (57% men, 43% women). That article fails to mention this.

I don't form my opinions from reading news articles written by "journalists" that think their opinion is news.

I've lived in a household and family in the shadow of extreme mental illness. I'll stick with my opinion.
