Memories of TV and Radio Coverage

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

Re: Memories of TV and Radio Coverage

Thought Ian Day had no peer as a TV caller.
Peter Marker very good as well.
Going back a bit earlier, really liked Dennis Errey and Gerry Harrison too. Formed a nice team.

On radio, Rod McLeod and Brian Lees were a brilliant partnership on 5AD in late 70s - early 80s.
Fond memories.

I also rated Day and Marker. Didnt mind Bruce in that era either.

Gerry Harrison and David Darcy were a great combination.

Jim Deane was a personal favourite of mine on the radio.

I can still hear Jim Deane's voice at the start of the broadcast ...'good afternoon listeners and welcome to todays game'....Jim Deane was my favourite, his voice was football to me.

Can still play the caryard radio tune in my head ... 'put your self in safe hands at southland mitsubishi'... and the Kenmax TV commercial meant the 'Big Replay' was on TV.

1981-1983 were my formative years of SANFL footy, I couldn't get to many games but never missed a radio broadcast.

The footy round started with the Thursday night team anouncements with Max Stevens on 5AD (I think). Friday morning's 'Advertiser' and afternoon's 'The News' was a must for a comprehensive writeup by the footy writers and tips. Saturday morning started with the 9:00am sports show on radio and then TV coverage of the reserves at 11:00am. Start of the match of the day radio broadcast was at 1:00pm and with 3 stations covering a game each Norwood game was usually but not always featured. Round the ground score updates during the game and at the end of each quarter breaks kept you well informed along the way. At the end of the game there was a comprehensive summary of the featured game followed by comprehensive round the grounds wrap-up of all the other games which meant the radio broadcast usually concluded around 6:00pm. Saturday night was the Big Replay on Ch 7.

The following day the 'Sunday Mail' had a comprehensive write up of all games, up to 1/2 page of writing per game.

My memories of the days when SANFL meant everything and I simply couldn't get enough of the footy media coverage.

Growing up in the 1980's....

I remember Channel 7 doing the television broadcasts with Bruce McAveney, Ian Day, Robert Oatey and Peter Marker as commentators. They used to show a reserves game from 11 am on the Saturday morning and then one hour highlights that evening of two games including the 'Match of the day" (with all 10 teams generally getting a fair go re: air time). Even though I am a West Adelaide fan, I never missed Seven's Big Replay. Later years saw people like Rick Keegan, Keith Conlon, Max Stevens and Graham Campbell join the commentary.

I also recall that while Seven had the SANFL television rights, Ten actually showed the Escort Cup. One of Ten's EC commentators was none other than Graham Goodings. Bob Hammond was another IIRC.

I also remember Nine having "KG's Footy Show" with a player from each team appearing to talk about the days games. From memory that started at 5:30 pm and was a half hour show. I never missed that show if I could help it. I have memories of guest players including Michael Aish, Rick Davies, Tim Ginever, Ian Borchard, Max Parker, Stephen Kernahan and Tony McGuinness.

KG on the radio was always a classic. "Strike me pink, its champagne football". There was never a more passionate supporter of South Australian football than KG.

Got more into listening to the radio as I grew up and have to admit that Jimmy Deane was my favourite caller.

Back then the SANFL was everything and the VFL just just the Victorian version. Sure we'd get the Sterling Cup (mostly because the previous years SANFL Grand Finallists were included), the VFL Grand Final, and I also remember watching Saturday afternoon highlights with Drew Morphett when he was still at the ABC, but the main focus in Adelaide was always the local competition.

How times change.

I remember watching the ressies on TV every week in the morning/early arvo and then watching the movie afterwards because they showed the live scores almost as a ticker (as we'd call it these days).

Radio, I used to listen intently to the 'league teams' on Thursday nights and find out who had been dropped from the league team and who had replaced them. I used to write them all down as quickly as I could - for Sturt and their opponents.

I used to watch KG's show and the Footy panel show with Max Hall on Sundays. 7's big replay with Mike Coward used to be certain viewing on Sat nights, even after we'd been to the footy to see if my team won the replay!

On Sundays I used to love watching the SAFA with Gary Window and Ian Aitken. My fave was Edwardstown but my uncle was involved with Flinders Pk and my dad was hooked up with Ingle Farm. Still, my allegiance to the double blues meant Ron Ingham (how is my memory?) was my fave (lefty from Eddies).

Max Hall, KG, the best caller in the world Ian "ducks the chutney" Day, Peter Marker. Those were the voices much like Richie and Tony, Bill and Ian that will stick with me as voices of an era.

I loved those days and miss them greatly. I was saying to someone today that when our kids grow to my age what are they going to remember about the SANFL. Unfortunately the grand old days are well and truly gone. They will never be back. We should embrace it rather than try and fight it. Things have changed, some for the better, some not. There isn't much we can do about it other than move with the times.

What memories as a boy growing up in the Mid to Late 70s thru the 80s. Used to watch the Ressies after al the cartoons. Go and kick the ball with a mate or play a imaginary game myself which Port always won and Bucky was BOG. Would then set up in the kitchen with the radio on. We had this board game that was the size of our kitchen table approx. 6ft to 8ft long. wasn't really a board game but a piece of cardboard that folded in halves to put away. Used to flick a little footy around and land on things like umpire which you picked up the umpire card that maid a decision or toss the ball up and you flicked the ball up in the air whatever it landed on was whos teams kick. You had to land on either the fwd areas marked in the fwd pocket/ full fwd/ half fwds pr CHF to have a shot thru the goals. Had a scoreboard with numbers. Oval was marked out on cardboard with the crowd on the outside, hours and hours of fun. never seen or heard of anyone having on, the oldman ditched it as we got older. Anyway I would play this using the oven timer as a siren listening to the footy. Loved the around the grounds. Was generally listening to KG. Big Replay was a must. Daisy as a commentator and really liked David Darcy. KG footy show and the winners. How simple was life. SAFA was great on TV especially being a young lad at Ingle Farm who had a mighty side in 1979 but went down to flinders park

I had one Bulldogs. Great fun. We used to (outside of the game itself) try and flick it from one goalsquare to the other. Which was quite difficult given the circular discs to flick them with.

Remember those board games, had one of each came out about 1973-74 had one huge one which had all different areas on the ground and you had to flick it with your fingers to a team mate on the board or you lost possession. Glenelg & Richmond always won. It had the diamond on it. It was produced by Amscol/Peters from memory. Received the other one that you had the flick the football with a plastic flicker to score goals got that one at the 1974 Advertiser Christmas Party. Had housrs of fun playing them until my sisters wrecked them, because I took up the whole table to play them!!!!

Whenever I hear the Booze Brothers ad on the radio, it takes me back to the late 80s/early 90s, following Elizabeth Football Club around and hearing that ad during a break in the coverage of the footy - whether on a car radio or someone sitting with a transistor watching the SAFA game I was at. Was usually followed by an around the grounds update, which usually revealed Centrals were losing.

Ian Day with his "stacks on the mill" reference, plus his call during a state game that ended in "What an absolute ball-tearer"!!

I read that former TV commentator and Norwood player Gerry Harrison has passed away.

Enjoyed his commentary back in the day.

It seemed like four out of every five goals scored whilst Daisy was commentating were "brilliantly done".

Yes, agree GWW. I recall him doing the ABC telly commentary in the late 80s. Part of the team with Daryl Hicks IIRC (whose style was a bit annoying).
