Round 6
Adelaide Lutheran v Fitzroy: Adelaide Lutheran managed to sneak over the line against Houghton on the weekend, a score line possibly closer than many would've picked. Swag of goal kickers, and looks like some players have returned, the win was a crucial one for Lutheran who hold touch with the top 5, and keep the gap on Ingle Farm. Phelan continues to have a strong season, along with Brereton and Tscharke. Byford kept quiet once again didn't matter for the 'Dogs as they enjoyed more avenues to goal on the smaller surrounds of Houghton Memorial. Fitzroy on the other hand will be disappointed in their offerings on the weekend. After nearly upsetting the Lodge on ANZAC Day, the Lions took a backwards step, slaughtered by the Cats to the tune of 108 points. Todd, O'Regan and Swanson continuing to be key players for the Cats. Fitzroy just appear to lack a genuine match winner, and depth is being tested. The loss of Asfaha is hurting, and Mancheff's influence is being curbed. Another tough week for the 'Roys coming up, and I think they'll remain winless for another week.
Brahma Lodge v Mitchell Park: Huge win for the Tigers, comprehensively beating TOS and inflicting the reigning premiers second consecutive defeat of the season, to reaffirm their position as a genuine contender for this season. Hem-Mendes led the way with 5 goals while the big man Lehmann collected another lazy 3. Good to see Burchall finding some form, and the Lodge finding more match winners aside from the regulars of the past year. They'll be eager to register another big win this weekend, and keep the pressure right on West Croydon at the top. They run into a Mitchell Park lineup that have this year proven to be a handful. They play a similar style to the Lodge, and have their share of match winners. Nick Leck is a danger, player for the future, morel may be lucky to hold onto him again for another week - too good for B grade footy. Wilson provides options for goal, Chadwick was superb and Moroney is dangerous. Waack looked like proving the match winner, his change out of position probably tipped balance in the Farmers favour. They'll give the Tigers a good run this week, especially if they can get a few back, but it's a big ask, and this will be a true test of where they're at.
Mawson Lakes v Ingle Farm: As with the A grade, ladder position means little when these two sides meet. Although Farmers have managed to secure points over the past couple of seasons, it hasn't been with out a fight, and they're genuinely competitive contests. Ingle Farm bounced back into the winners circle Saturday with a hard fought win over Mitchell Park, but still find themselves behind the 8-ball in the fight for the 5, securing back to back wins are crucial for their chances., this is as an important game as any for the Farmer. Mawson Lakes on the other hand, have proven competitive this season whilst still winless. A tough day against the undefeated West Croydon last week, they'll be keen to bounce back with a better showing this week. Pearce continues to lead the way for the Mossies, and a lot of newer names amongst their lineup is a good thing as they add depth and look to support the A grade. Looking forward to an enjoyable contest, but Ingle Farm start favourites in this match.
West Croydon v Houghton Districts: West Croydon firming as flag favourites in both grades, look irresistible. They face a winless Houghton this week, and it's hard to see them being stopped again. Their forward line wouldn't look out of place in the A grade just quietly, and Campbell continues to torment opposition fullbacks. Shut him down and Stubberfield pops up.. Shut him down and you've got to deal with Cuellar.. Shut him down and well you get the idea, the list goes on. Sawtell and Emery both in exquisite form, would be short odds for the medal in the early stages. Houghton on the flip side showed signs of improvement on the weekend against Adelaide Lutheran. Oswald up forward with 3 goals led the way, while Wood, Purdon and Jay Szabo amongst the best. Could potentially have the advantage in the ruck in this contest, they'll need to work hard to stay in the game. As with the A grade though, an honourable loss would be viewed as a pass mark from outsiders, given West Croydons strength.
Woodville South v Trinity OS: Match of the round, Woody South an outstanding B grade unit with dangerous players everywhere - Todd, O'regan, Swanson. Rudiger and Cross are no mugs in B grade footy either, and carry A grade experience. The Cats keep winning and winning well, they'll be full of confidence and expectant of a victory this week, but they run into the wounded Lion of Trinity, a side that has suffered back to back defeats and would be seething and dropping those games. A proud side, they'll be eager to bounce back and prove themselves, and what better way than against a top side like Woody South. Costs and Dimuccio the keys for TOS, their runners will enjoy a big ground I fancy, and if Kreig returns he offers plenty up forward. Simpson v King Disibio in the ruck will be a crucial battle. Don't count out the little master from getting his side returning to the winners circle here, should be a belter of a match.
