Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis says Jarryd Roughead's recurrence of a melanoma has hit the Hawks forward hard, saying the diagnosis is "extremely serious".
Roughead has been sidelined indefinitely after suffering a recurrence of a melanoma, after having one on his lip removed last year, which saw him sit out two AFL matches.
The 29-year-old had a check-up on Monday and the return of the melanoma was detected. He will undergo a biopsy to determine the best form of treatment.
An emotional Lewis, holding back tears, told Fox Footy's AFL 360 on Tuesday night it would be hard for the club to move on, but that is what Roughead would want.
Lewis said the recurrence had "shaken" Roughead.
"Probably in his head, he thought he was over it because he had a scan six months ago and nothing showed up. But obviously the scan this time has shown differently," Lewis said.
"It's very serious, extremely serious. Any form of cancer is serious but it's going to be a bit of a tough road for him. But we're there for him.
"It hit him hard. When we were both at the club, we sat in our player development manager's office and we both just had a bit of a cry.
"No words were needed but the seriousness of it would break anyone down, no matter how strong or how fit you are."
Roughead had already been sidelined for the whole of the AFL season so far after undergoing a knee reconstruction, but he was just weeks away from a return to the oval before the latest diagnosis.
"He was really looking forward to coming back," Lewis said.
"He's a pretty resilient sort of guy. He'd put in a hard work and a lot of that hard work was away from the main group, because he wasn't able to train.
"That's just been taken away from him, but ... that is secondary to what we're dealing with at the moment - and that's his health and making sure he's OK."
The AFL community is offering its best wishes to the Hawthorn forward, with Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge saying Roughead's courage will help him in his latest battle.
"Roughy is a close friend of mine as well, and it's a bit distressing. Let's hope he's alright," Beveridge said.
"He's got enormous courage and support around him, and I'm sure, I'm sure, well I hope he'll be fine."

I am no expert, however melonoma's are, from what I understand bloody aggressive. That's what got Jimmy Stynes...

Well....that was pretty tough to watch, and won't be much fun to write about.

First up, well played Swans, too good last night. Heeney impressed, along with Hewett (a bloke I had never heard of) good game. But enough about them.

A tough week in the lead up to the game, but it's not like the Hawks had not dealt with adversity before. Now whether you feel it leaves them flat, or revs them up, I reckon once your on the ground all that stuff it peripheral. Game on, get on with it. Hawthorn controlled the first 7 or 8 minutes play, but made zero, ziltch, didly effin squat impact on the scoreboard. All wasted effort and energy. Then it became an arm wrestle. Some may say "crap football", I don't subscribe to that....it was a contest, and one in the end that the Swans won.

By half way through the second quarter Hawthorn looked like the team that got a fair touch up by the West Coast in that first final last year.... The good news was the way they responded to that game. Can we respond again?

Then Buddy did, what Buddy does, still a champion in my books, the boo's were disappointing, but hey... we've all got them!

The Hawks forward line - non existent - Gunston, Poppy, Bruest, Cyril all unsighted. While we are missing Roughy down there, neither Big Boy, or Cegs making an impact either.

Third quarter and the magnet board got a much needed shuffle... Cyril onto the ball, far from having much impact on the game, at least he got a bloody kick. Gunston started leading up, and we looked better. Overall just far too many mistakes to beat any team, let alone one who are at the pointy end. Both Sicily & O'Brien took marks but neither could goal when we needed it..... too far behind game over.

So what do they take out of the game. The players - a decent reality check, and a solid boot up the ar$e. The Coaching staff - my bet is that some laptops will be working over time picking apart what the Swans did last night, and a structure worked on to counter that for later in the season.

There were times in 2015 I thought the Hawks were dead set shot, but they picked themselves up, dusted themselves up, and responded.... it's that time again. Some "winnable" games ahead....Interested in your take on the game, and the road ahead... MatteeG, Grenville, Days Of etc.,.

I wouldn't read too much into this game TBH. A very emotional week took its toll. Taking nothing away from Sydney though, but under different circumstances, Hawks win.

HAWTHORN star Jordan Lewis will play his 250th AFL match this weekend.

The 30-year-old made his debut for the Hawks in Round 3, 2005, after being recruited by the Hawks with pick seven in the 2004 NAB AFL Draft.

Lewis has been a regular fixture in the Hawks’ line-up over the past 12 seasons, and a key contributor to team success.

The midfielder’s list of accomplishments is lengthy.

Lewis is a four-time premiership player (2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015) and has won a host of club awards.

In 2014, Lewis was the club’s Peter Crimmins Medallist and also earned All Australian selection, after a career-best season in which he averaged almost 28 disposals and six clearances per match.

He has also won the club’s best first year player award (2005), best clubman (2011), most consistent player (2012) and was a NAB Rising Star nominee in 2005.

Over the course of his 249 games to date – which includes 21 finals appearances - Lewis has averaged 23.5 disposals and kicked 137 goals.

Lewis sits in 13th place on Hawthorn’s all-time games list.

He has been vice-captain since the start of 2011, and has captained the Hawks in 22 matches over the past six seasons in the absence of Luke Hodge.

The Hawks take on the Brisbane Lions in Round 10, on Saturday afternoon at the Gabba.

Early in the year you've been able to set up the zones behind the ball and strangle sides going forward. Gibson reaped the benefits of that early on amassing some big numbers. Once Gibson was tailed everywhere, Mitchell and Hodge took over with Lewis to win the contested ball and Cyril and Poppy had some fun with the slicker ball movement.

Now Hodge is out, Mitchell is closely guarded and Gibson isn't allowed to roam free the work load on Lewis has increased. This is why, in my opinion, Hawthorn can't win the flag without Roughead. Roughead. like Burgoyne, gets thrown in the middle from time to time to take some of the heat off of Hodge, Lewis and Mitchell. Then, then he goes forward as the long option when Gunston is leading up, or Breust is on the move. Roughy is the bail out.
Friday night Gunston looked great when he led up, but most of his best work was done on or outside 50 which can be problematic if he's any further up the ground. Breust, he too has grabbed some lead up marks in that 35-45m range and capitalized.
While Hartung, Duryea and Shiels are becoming more consistent, they aren't the likes of above. Siciliy and O'Brien are also impressive, Siciliy very impressive.

In all, Grundy on his own, without Richards there, showed the big men in the defence against the Hawks forwards will have a field day. The "next" big guy gets Gunston, the mid Breust and while Poppy and Cyril are hard to stop they are also capable, like all small forwards, of just going missing.
PAFC. Forever.

I tend to agree with your summation Boon. It's like Domino's when one falls, its a knock on affect. Clarko has said it plenty of times, a soldier goes, down and is replaced by another one. It's those replacements that aren't quite cutting it.... yet. When Roughy is there, he draws the best tall back, Gunston the second best etc. In terms of the midfield, look at the Cats - Danger is drawing the best tag (but racking up anyway), Selwood the next best, leaving Guthrie to run amok... you can't match them all up. Hodge & Roughy out is hurting... and I predict whatever the outcome come season end, the Hawks will move another few old boys on. Probably mids in Burgoyne, maybe Mitchell as well. Tough calls, who'd be a list manager!
