It's going to be a chinese team that plays most home games in China but will occasionally play games on the GC when here so not really a GC team and if it's being backed by the CBA as it sounds like finances aren't a concern.

I think it's a positive for the NBL because getting China involved will bring in a lot of interest and a lot of money the concern I have is if once the NBL gets used to living the good life and then they decide it's no longer working for them and pull out the bubble might burst. Starting next year I think it is Australia moves into the FIBA Asia group in relation to future qualifying for Olympics and World Cup's so us and China will be playing a lot more against each other and with their insatiable appetite for basketball along with the drive to get better it would make a lot of sense for them to have a chinese team in the NBL.

The difference between this and the previous Singapore expansion is that Singapore doesn't have much of a sporting tradition so the Slingers were always going to struggle to attract interest there unlike a chinese team in China and they have a much larger population with a want to spend a lot of money on basketball. That's where Brian Goorjian has been for a number of years now coaching in China getting paid a lot more there than he could back here.

Melbourne United today announced the re-signing of forward David Barlow to a 1 year deal after he missed all of last season due to an achilles injury.

Also the Sydney Kings have signed former Townsville Crocs guard Mirko Djeric who us 36ers fans would remember from that Crocs shock comeback win up there last season.

I would rate the 2000 Olympic team that finished 4th our best.

Andrew Gaze, Shane Heal, Luc Longley, Mark Bradtke, Andrew Vlahov, Ricky Grace, Sam MacKinnon, Chris Anstey, Paul Rogers, Jason Smith, Brett Maher, Martin Cattalini.

When BA first announced the 26 man squad I think they said it would be culled to 16 so I think one has been added more for his service than being a genuine chance of being on the team and I think that's Exum. He's only just been cleared for contact and I highly doubt the Jazz would let him play. Aside from that I don't think Exum would be in our best 12 anyway.

Dellavedova/Lisch
Mills/Newley/Goulding
Ingles/Broekhoff
Andersen/Motum/Bairstow
Bogut/Baynes

That would be my team.

He made himself unavailable for selection. Would've been fortunate to make it anyway, IMO.

It's looking a bit that way although getting Anthony Drmic was considered a bit of a coup but it looks to me when Joey got that 3 year extension it might've been with the understanding we're now entering a rebuilding phase. Gibbo was going anyway and then with Petrie leaving it might have hastened the rebuild.

We made the Grand Final in 2014, semi-finals in 2015 and then tried to squeeze the last drop out this previous season with Gibbo in his last season and Petrie on the decline which was probably the thinking behind the Ebi Ere signing he turned out to be cooked and we lucked into finding Randle which made us better than we probably should've been.

Joey likes to play an up temp run and gun style which suits Randle perfectly and younger players too so I'm not quite as glum as I was heading into last season. That roster (with McNeail and no Randle) had almost no chance of going anywhere. At least this team should be better to watch.

It looks to me we might be going:

Johnson/Hodgson
Import/Deng
Import/Creek
Drmic/Teys
Randle/Sobey/Doyle

Even if we were still able to sign a guy like Steindl instead of an import SF but made sure we got some sort of decent low post defender with the import PF spot I would be reasonably happy with that given the potential upside and the 36ers just don't have the budget of some of the other teams.

The Sixers need to sign some decent talent to compliment Randle, what they've put together so far isn't good enough.

You don't need to bottom out in the NBL, so no excuses for anything other than a season that has playoffs within reach. Obviously we don't have the spending power of some others, but the squad looks very disappointing so far. Plenty talent around the globe, just need to bring it to Adelaide. No point of being in the competition if we aren't in it to win it.

It's a different sport, but if Adelaide United can do it, then so can the 36ers.

Geez Melbourne United are starting to look strong though

A bit of NBL news with the announcement today of the inaugural Australian National Pro Combine that will take place from June 20-21 at the State Basketball Centre in Melbourne. Speaking of the 36ers they've unfortunately had to pull out of the pre-season Merlion Cup tournament in Singapore due to the dates clashing with the NBL's pre-season Blitz tournament which will again be held in Brisbane.

Damn that sucks to see a good Adelaide lad in Newley go to bloody Sydney :( Didn't he sign a contract to with the 36ers several years ago before he went to Europe? Maybe around the time Houston picked him in the NBA Draft.

Good to see he carved out a very respectable career in Europe though. Would've been nice living in the Canary Islands. Wish he was still there and not playing for those purple pansies!

Yeah he left Townsville and signed with the 36ers in 2007 but also put his name in the draft and when Houston picked him they told him to go and play in Europe so he exercised the NBA/European out-clause from his 36ers contract so never played for us and played in Greece, Lithuania, Turkey and then Spain.

I know Newley had a kid a few years ago but I'm surprised he is coming back now at 31. I had assumed he would've stayed over there for as long as he could then maybe come back to the NBL right at the end of his career and play a season or two for the 36ers.
