Yep. Drawback of the double dissolution is it makes it much, much easier to get a quota or two. Libs were always going to drop a few senators but took the punt that dealing with more crossbenchers would be more suitable than dealing with the crossbenchers they had to.

Final washup as it stands seems to be the Coalition returning. The in doubt seats they lead with the seats called gives them 77 seats with 76 needed to win. 77 would give them a friendly speaker too. The old traditional advantage of postal and absentee votes going the way of the coalition should help, but that seems to shrink each time.

In the senate, loads of things to play out there, but a few they're calling as likely ins. 3 for Xenophon which really tilts the balance here. Hinch is in, which is scary and I hope he picks up a few fines after admitting to voting for the first time. Lambie is back and so is Pauline Hanson. Sigh. Still, looks like we'll see more freaks, err, independant/minor pary senators. 11 yet to even get a seat allocated based on a quota or near quota. Which means preference flows from the majors could well see a lot of those being filled up by the old "anyone but the other major" policy. Could be fun to watch this next term. And by fun, I mean chaos. And by chaos, I mean a senate that might more closely resemble feeding time in the chimp enclosure.

The senate will be just another mess really. While you may not see all the Palmers or ex Palmers and guys like Bob Day and Ricky Muir, you will get treated to Hinch, Hanson and god knows what else.

They can belittle as much as they want but this is the same path they always tread. They will get block in the senate on so many things simply because well you can see it now. They have no interest in working with the independents but they need them.

I would rather cut my dick off than vote Xenophon or in particular Greens but noone has the right to say you can't vote for them as some senior Liberals have basically intimated recently. As Benny said, it's a democracy. I reckon Hinchy could be worth watching in the Senate, some of the stuff he will say under the protection of parliamentary privilege will make the hair stand on end.

The electorate has made a man a senator when he has never voted, and used his position to actively encourage others to vote informal.
Hinch is proud he has never voted, and has encouraged others not to. Irony much? Someone willing and eager to benefit from a system in which he has never participated is at best self-serving (not, as he has duped his followers, community-serving); at worst narcissistic, seeing himself as above the law. Which of course he does do, having intentionally flouted it - and the rights of others - and been imprisoned for it. Let's not forget his contempt of court conviction was for jeopardising the trial of the bastard who raped and killed Jill Meagher, not, as he's convinced his followers, for exposing peadophiles.
